Take Hulk Hogan. Hard to beat the Hulkster for raw, stereotypical masculinity. Since seeing him in a tutu on the cover of "Mr. Nanny", I cant help but think of him in a tutu. He's lost a measure of masculinity. I have no problem with a man seeming traditionally feminine (If they can pull it off), but it doesn't make them more masculine. If I wore makeup and a feather boa, I would not be more masculine, I would just look like the world's worst drag queen. I don't know the context of the statement, but my guess is either that A: It was a guy who likes women's underwear and feels guilty/dirty, B: it was a girl who is attracted to feminine men but wants to avoid seeming butch herself, or C: Becky got Tim into a tutu.
showing that you are not afraid of the world and its judgements or expectations is probably the "manliest" thing you could do... so yes, i suppose if you are comfortable enough with who you are that you are unafraid of the rest of the world... then that would make you masculine?
I think it's just one of those quotes that is said so people remember it, but which doesn't have any actual meaning. But it is certainly full of stereotypes.
i've had too much gender theory. i've heard that before. if i were a professor, assigning extra credit points, i would give two points to guitarista for knowing the classical answer, 1 point to matt for attributing explanations for gender bending to fear but not using it as a a call to revolution, 3 points on the lab for tim, hopes to see a reflection paper from becky, a smile to rae for standing up in class and asking the question... and beth, who has the most classical training in gender, wouldn't need any extra credit points anyway, but i still admire her cynicism.
i'd like to see this post phrased in lesbian terms. "going femme is the butchest thing you can do." I like it because the same people who argue that masculine/feminine divide should be less divided argue that lesbians are butch or femme, and that's just how they are. so are we supposed to break down all stereotypes, even the ones that are a response to oppression? I think so...says the west coast granola dyke wearing a tie-dyed tank, no bra, corduroys several
