She'd been drifting around a bit that day, unable to settle on what she was doing or even who precisely was doing it. But then she'd remembered the ball, and that Lyra was going and was expecting her, and had settled into Rosalind and headed that way.
It occurred to her that Lyra might have preferred Arya, but Arya didn't much feel like going to a ball. Besides. It was a masquerade ball, and that meant...
Lyra was very pretty?
Although when it reached her mouth the sentiment came out more as "...what did you do to your face?" so maybe Arya wasn't entirely absent tonight after all.
"I didn't do it!" Lyra snapped rather hotly, followed shortly thereafter by indignant sulking. However, the flurry of emotions was entirely fleeting, and soon enough she'd calmed down enough to add, "Surreal did it to me. And now I'm going to do it to you."
This part she seemed much more content with, and even semi-delighted.
"It doesn't take very long. I've got the gist of it down, so don't worry."
Her eyes widened a little. She even almost took a step back.
"Are you sure? It looks complicated," she said, Rosalind's greater temerity coming in handy for things like avoiding having makeup plastered over her face.
For a little longer. She knew Lyra, and she didn't hold out much hope of convincing her otherwise.
All right, so Lyra did indeed have the gist of it down, but the funny thing about makeup was that it was actually much more complicated than it seemed. She imagined that she could easily mess the whole thing up, but she wasn't going to let Arya know that much.
"Of course I'm sure," she shrugged, seemingly wholly confident in her prettifying abilities. "Besides, if you're going to be her then she would like this sort of thing," she announced. "She wouldn't show up to a fancy masquerade unprepared, would she?"
