He held the diamond up appraisingly and examined it through his glasses.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” Rose asked. The light reflecting off the huge stone dazzled her.
“Not really.”
“What?” He was usually the first to say something was beautiful or interesting or fantastic.
He held the jewel loosely, like it was nothing more than a piece of fruit. “There’s nothing unique about it. What makes this one more beautiful than any other diamond? All that nonsense about colour and clarity and cut, it’s rubbish. It doesn’t mean anything. There are a million of them out there, with people trying to make them all the same, even artificially, when they’re nothing but coal and time. It’s just something common dressed up like something else.”
She smiled sardonically. “Kinda like me, I suppose.”
He looked at her the same way he had examined the diamond, serious and unsmiling. He paused in thought. “Not quite.”
He tossed the diamond back to the rather disgruntled seller and started to walk on to the next stall before Rose could ask him to explain. She followed, frowning, and almost didn’t catch what he said.
“You took a lot less time to turn into something precious.”
