As a writer, or at least someone who writes, the annoying thing about meeting new people is that you immediately have one less name that you can use for characters.

Of course, most writers have more problems with meeting people than that...

I've never found that... but I don't think I've met anyone in years with a unique name. Maybe the trick is to stick to meeting people called Sarah or John.

I do find that I attribute characteristics to certain names based on people I know - when reading characters with names like those, the character has to be written well enough that I believe the name fits - even if the character doesn't match what I think about the name - or it doesn't read well for me.

On the odd occasions when I write these days, the challenge for writing characters with names I already know is to resist turning the character into an amalgamation of people from real life. It doesn't happen very often.

On an unrelated note, I will be in Sydney live for one night only (!) on Friday the 4th September - using the last of my swanky hotel points on my way back from NZ. I get in mid-afternoon & leave late morning on the Saturday. We should hang and stuff. I'll have my people call your people closer to the time.

I just realised that I never actually responded to this. I would indeed like to see you for your one night only (!) in Sydney. Nat has also reminded me that there's a new Twilight movie coming up, perhaps these stars could align in some meaningful way.
