10 Words to describe your character: Sharp, loyal, honest, determined, impulsive, hardworking, quiet, friendly, patient, intelligent.

EXTENDED APPLICATION -- PLEASE DO AT LEAST A PARAGRAPH ON EACH OF THESE, UNLESS THEY ARE STATED TO BE OPTIONAL

Personality:
Alex Heights is a well-balanced, usually relaxed guy. He’s patient and fairly friendly, not easily bothered by small disputes, though the ones that he is bothered by can launch him into a furious rage. He is hardworking, loyal, and honest to the bone, almost brutally so. He’s quick to say what’s on his mind immediately, and finds it quick to make both friends and enemies with his straightforward words and opinions-though, in turn he can be easily hurt by the right words or actions. Though fairly quiet, he is more than eager to help someone in need, especially when it is a problem that has to do with schoolwork. He’s patient when it comes to helping with homework, but if a question arises that he can’t solve, he can become obsessed with discovering the answer to it.

He is very much a family oriented person, keeping in careful contact with his mother and father, especially because of the war. But at school he’s also a perfectionist and obsessive over truly excelling in many aspects of magic. Because of this, he’s able to get on good terms with many people (being very willing to help others), but has not really been able to make any solidly true “best friends.” This doesn’t really bother him, although occasionally he would love to have someone to really be able to talk to and confide in.

He is a natural optimist but has gotten more and more uneasy concerning recent events-the war, despite not knowing anyone who has perished in it, is bothering him greatly. He feels that when he leaves the refugee of Hogwarts school, he will have to become directly involved in the war effort-somehow. Though, he’s not exactly sure what he’ll do after school.

Strengths: Both magical and personality:
When it comes to exams, he’s quick to kick it into high gear, and works hard about subjects he cares about (being Defense Against the Dark Arts, Charms, and Transfiguration, especially) to get top grades. He does brilliantly in physical magical work, including wand work (his current goal is being able to keep his O’s for his NEWTS and perhaps even getting an O in his Potions).

Aside from being a good student, he’s a wonderful conversationalist, though is so quiet and shy that it often takes someone else to initiate the conversation in order for it to really progress. But despite being quiet he’s far from serious, and loves to laugh and appreciate life for what it is. He greatly appreciates people reaching out to others, and loves the simple connections that some people will make just be to kind to someone.

He often leaps into things (for example, if he sees someone picking on someone else), and feels that it is his duty to at least keep an eye on the politics within Hogwarts, even if he can’t do anything about what’s going out outside it right now.

Weaknesses: Both magical and personality:
Alex is impulsive and lives for the day, which gives him a dampener on dealing with the past and the too-distant future (hence, why he just couldn’t keep up with his Divination and History of Magic classes). However, he can obsess over past mistakes and has a hard time moving on from them, as well as mistakes of people around him, causing him to hold grudges quickly and for a long time.

Often times he’s constantly working so hard he loses sleep over problems or schoolwork. Though this has allowed him to rise to being better in schoolwork to many of his peers, he can work himself to being absolutely exhausted, and is periodically prone to completely breaking down for days at a time. However, being a proud person, he doesn’t allow anyone to see him in such a state, and is able to prepare a Calming Draught that tastes faintly of marshmallow. Even when he is not on one of his brinks (which luckily happens only occasionally), he can still get easily caught up in his work and forgets about prior commitments he might have made in losing track of time.

Alex can very quickly lose his temper over hearing someone bashing the Hufflepuff house in general, sometimes even forgoing his usual relative politeness and launching into actual unfair insults in return (though he always feels badly afterwards). Because he usually hears comments of this sort from (generally) Slytherins, he is very wary of the ones he has just met, though does not hold the popular belief that all Slytherins are ‘evil.’

Fears:
One of his most intense fears is loss of his family or people he knows to the war, and another is not being able to be able to help with the war efforts when he leaves school. Because of this, he is studying to ensure that he will never not be able to get to a position that he wants to go to.

History:
Alex was born in Bath, England to his Muggle mother and magical bookseller father, and from a very young age he showed great magical potential. When he was three, the family moved to London, where his father, Martin, opened a bookstore in Diagon Alley. He was home schooled from early childhood, and therefore knows a lot about Muggle culture, as his mother took care of him primarily when he was young. (Andrea is a very charming woman, social and funny, though slightly ditzy. However, she is a very caring, supportive mother, and loved her son even more than he loved her.) He has no siblings, and the friends he did have were none-magical folk, usually the children of his mother’s friends. Obviously, it was hard for him to bond with them, especially when keeping the secret of his father’s odd behaviors… well, a secret. Still, he spent a lot of time at the local libraries, devouring information and great adventurous stories, some of them enriching and underlining the reality of his magical existence. They were friends enough to him, and ones that he could usually relate to.

So it was of great relief to young Alex when he was accepted into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he was certain he could at least be comfortable with other people there like him. His father was overjoyed (he had, of course, been a Ravenclaw at his time at Hogwarts), and that very afternoon he took Alex into Diagon Alley, and, after careful consideration on his son’s part, bought him a cat. (Originally his plan had been to buy his son a broomstick, but as broomsticks were both not allow to first years and terribly expensive, not to mention the fact that Alex was hardly interested in them, he quickly changed his mind.) This cat (a kitten at that point, really) was gray and extremely affectionate, even when Alex was first looking at the selection of animals. It was her he chose, and he named her Keira. As magical creatures are a great deal more intelligent than normal animals, it was easy for them to become fast friends, despite the fact that Alex did most of the talking.

When Alex Heights first entered Hogwarts and was sorted as a Hufflepuff, he was extremely disappointed and figured that there must be something wrong with him. As the first few months passed, however, he found himself growing to love his house more and more, and is now fiercely protective of the Hufflepuff house. The war has made him slightly bitter about his idea of justice, though-the idea of retribution is starting to seem more and more fair to him, especially for the hideous crimes the Death Eaters have done.

Not that he says that out loud, of course. That is but a whisper in the back of his mind, one that he does his best to ignore.

Now, as he is approaching the last few years of his life at Hogwarts, worry about finally getting into the “real world” and the war is catching up to him. He’s nervous about that new world, terrified of having to get out there and make everything happen for him on his own. Terrified greater that he won’t be able to handle it, and the world will just wash right over him and rip him apart.

So he’ll be prepared.

Physical Description: At the least, provide base details of build, height, eye/hair colour, and complexion.
Alex is tall and sturdily built, with tanned skin and gray-green eyes. He has a somewhat ruffled appearance, with always slightly wrinkled robes or uniform, or his short black hair sticking out in awkward angles. He can usually be seen with a comfortable, pleasant smile on his face, though looks fairly tired. He doesn’t usually wear wizard robes, but never fails to wear his Hogwarts uniform and Hufflepuff tie.

Significant Relationships:
Family
Martin and Andrea Heights have strongly influenced Alex into being a good, honorable person. They’ve taught him the value of hard work and also given him the experience of being able to view the lives of the Muggle world and the Wizarding world, giving him equal appreciation for both. He especially adores his mother, who works in the medical business. He’s considering following in her footsteps, and still finds the time to write to both his parents often.
Friends
Unless you count his cat, he doesn’t have any best friends. But is generally on the good sides of the people he knows, as he is usually a fun and unassuming person, if a little quiet.

Special Considerations: Such as broom ownership, being an animagus, famous in some form, or a metamorphmagus. All are subject to mod approval.

COMMUNITY SPECIFIC QUESTIONS -- ONLY ANSWER THE SECTION APPLICABLE TO YOUR CHARACTER
Hogwarts:
Year: 6th.
House: Hufflepuff.
Why are they in that house? Alex embodies a variety of Hufflepuff traits that he never noticed himself until he was put into the Hufflepuff house-such as the fact that he worked so hard in school was not the intelligence of a Ravenclaw but drive, his fierce protectiveness of his bloodline and House comes not from the convictions of a Gryffindor but loyalty. His honestly and fairness speaks for itself.
Position: (Subject to mod approval) None.

ROLEPLAY SAMPLE -- PLEASE ENSURE THAT THIS IS IN THIRD PERSON NARRATIVE POINT OF VIEW

Alex Heights woke up one morning to find it extremely hard to breathe.

Fortunately, this potentially terrifying happenstance was cut short when Alex glanced down at his chest to see that his cat had used it as a bed for the night. Rolling his eyes (more out of fondness than actual aggravation, though not that there was none of that), he grabbed his wristwatch from his bedside table and squinted at it in the faint morning light.

It was… a quarter ‘til Too Early. Marvelous.

Gently he pushed the sleeping cat off of him until he was able to edge himself out of bed as she slept soundly, quickly dressing and repacking his back for the day’s studies. He couldn’t be sure, but it appeared that the other bots in the dorm were still asleep, and were likely to stay so for another hour. Lucky them.

Still, he climbed up a flight of stairs to the common room, where a small amount of people were already awake. Amazing. He wondered briefly if everyone there had pets that woke them up that early as well.

“Good morning,” he greeted the room, and immediately made a beeline for one of the comfortable armchairs by the fire, intending on staying there until breakfast. Didn’t appear that there were many people in the common room to greet, but then, that was alright. Let it never be said that he wasn’t courteous. Of course, that was assuming that people talked about him anyway, and Alex was fairly certain that he wasn’t.

Unsurprised at the conclusion of the thought process, he cracked open the book he was holding and started reading, finishing up the chapter about ancient Egyptian potion techniques that he had started last night.
