I've always wondered at why people choose to live in set patterns. 9-5, Mon-Fri, Yearly Holidays, weekly meetings. Do people feel so empowered by their predictability, or so constrained in their habits, that they lose touch with the swirling winds of change ( Read more... )

I had completely accidently wandered across your name on the employee list of a certain up and coming game dev group and laughed so hard that I could say, "Hey I know that guy". Cool stuff, I hope it works out well for you.

The patterns you listed are easy to explain though. It would cost a large amount of money to alter them from what they are now, so people stick with it. Much of society is based around family needs, and those needs are someone has to supervise the children, and school does a decent enough job of that so many people work hours that are appropriate for that. 9-5 is more for retail type jobs though, I know at least for my company 7:30 is the 'average' start time, I get in at 6:30 so I can leave by 3.

I heard where it was that you got that full time job :) Told a friend about it and all he could say was "Fucking bastard!" for about 5 minutes!!
