Good news! Good news!

I think I am slowly, very slowly beginning to turn the page with the back pain problem. I have installed a stand-up setup at work where I can sit or stand part of the day, and this has made my days definitely bearable. I have seen a good surgeon consultant and he said that there is actually nothing wrong with my disks and my problem is in soft ( Read more... )

I liked this novel. It's ending was a bit 'WTF' and rushed for me, but other than that it was awesome. And the second novel in the series comes out tomorrow.

Also - happy to hear your back pain is less than before.

I thought the ending was fine. If it was the ending of a stand alone book, I wouldn't have liked it. As an end to first part, I thought it was good. I totally predicted it, but I do tend to predict the endings quite often anyways.

Yes, it was a bit predictable. I think I didn't care for the love story as much as I would have liked too. But, that's because the first half did so well without one and it felt like it made the second half of the novel a bit uneven.

I liked the love story. I think it was necessary from the POV of consistency - there must have been something to make two enemies to start look at each other in a different light.

Fwiw I really enjoyed both though in different ways (and Karou has some similarities to Katniss in terms of prickliness and wanting to do her own thing!).

I often think what have rubbed me so much in a wrong way in Katniss, and I think it wasn't herself , but the fact that she is often hailed as some feminist ideal. I try to explain: if I just read a book without people (but not you - other people :D) saying (or implying) "OH KATNISS ! You have to love her otherwise you don't believe/understand/agree with feminist ideals", I would have liked Katniss so much more. I don't know if this makes sense (and I don't think this necessary makes me a "good" reader.

So as Rachel said below , I don't think Katniss and Karou are very dissimilar. The big difference in "Daughter of smoke and bone" is there is no annoying love triangle involved, but as the characters Karou and Katniss have similarities.

I am so glad you like "Dance with Dragons". EEEEEEEEEEE! And yes, Tyrion and Dany are the worst parts in there. I adored everything in the North though, this book had some of my dearest scenes in the series.
