SYRIZA is coming

I don't think that SYRIZA's win would be a historic chance for Greece. Greece has been pretty democratic, constantly changing its government through elections, for 40 years. SYRIZA might be a radical democratic Left party, but for the Greek society it is more of a new PASOK. It is winning not because of ideology (which is fluid for any party in ( Read more... )

Why communists run separately from SYRIZA?

SYRIZA is somewhat better inclined towards Russia than previous government, but let's not mix stereotypes with reality. SYRIZA cannot void anti-Russian sanctions, and in general it will need to follow the European line in regard to Russia.

Communists are running separately because of the nature of this party, which is a remnant of Stalinist times with orthodox marxists ideas. Not very popular, but has a steady following. SYRIZA hosts a range of Communist movements which had broken up with the orthodox KKE.

No, it was not.
As scholar Theodore Pelagidis told me, "it is like the tea party in US agree with the progressive democrats''. But he thinks that this is a result of "totally opportunistic" new politics of Greece.
"One thing is for sure.: This is a result of austerity. Austerity destroys normal politics. A voter can easily vote for a left wing party and then, in a 6-month period, the same voter can vote for the extreme right", Mr Pelagidis said.
