Have you tried using the iPod Updater's Restore feature to restore your iPod to factory settings? My iPod would freeze here and there, and plugging it in would reset my computer 90% of the time; a restore did the trick.

If you need to take any music OFF the iPod before restoring it, I recommend EphPod.
