these are really amazing pictures, makes me want to go to south america even more. although, i really wasn't expecting it to be so built up. i'd like to visit more rural parts...
i think you should get involved with a homeless charity. it's very rewarding. my parents ran a soup kitchen out of the self-made church (of about 15 members) we went to in tennessee when i was younger, and i still remember what some of those people looked like, and their sad stories. a lot of them were really normal people who lost their jobs and were forced to live on the streets. as a result, they also lost their teeth and other vitals, making them look a lot less "civilized," which is why i think it's so easy for us (in general, as a society) to look past the homeless without feeling we can relate to them. what i'm trying to say is that i think working with the homeless is a good thing, because it makes you realize how easily we could all be in the same position.
So many people in American are 3 pay checks from being homeless, I read that somewhere. I don't get people who HATE homeless people, and I know a few people who do. I also don't get people who just walk by or turn their heads when a homeless person is speaking to them. Sure, they are probably begging and in Jacksonville you also have to hear the song and dance that begins with "Now, I'm not going to ask you for money." and ends with "So, do you think I could have some money for a ride back to (wherever)." but the point is that that could be any of us, given the right combination of unfortunate circumstances. And they are humans, you can't ignore them. Well, you can but you shouldn't and I think it says a lot about someone when they are mean to one of the most powerless group in our society. I don't know in what way I want to help these people really, but I want to do something.
It is winter in Argentina and I am about to move someplace that has no true winter so really it would have been impractical to buy anything. I didn't like how the polos looked. I should have bought a coat, they were beautiful and I will at some point need a good coat, I'm sure.
i like these pictures and i like your little stories. i think i have forced myself to become a little numb to homeless people, because i live in the middle of springfield, and it's everywhere. and i'm asked for money almost every day. i feel guilty sometimes, and sometimes i feel really terrible and sad. sometimes i give money, and other days i get very annoyed. it's hard to explain. but i do agree with amy, i sometimes think about volunteering at a soup kitchen or something. but i never do it.
I guess to me it's still almost a novelty to have people asking for money and that's why I feel obligated all the time. I'm sure I'll be over the homeless in Miami. "Sorry, I'm just over you."
