"Ah! It's raining," Jinki says, laughing and opening his mouth to catch the droplets.
Eunsook rolls onto her stomach, laughing with him. It's contagious really. "I thought you didn't like rain?" she asks, tilting her head so her hair isn't in the way and she can see the tiny beads of water landing on his tongue, his eyelashes, his cheeks.
"When did I say that?" he asks in return, shielding his eyes with his palm and stretching his tongue out farther to catch the drops better.
"Well you kept whining about an umbrella the other day, so I just thought you weren't a fan of it," she explains, scooting a bit closer, trying and probably failing to be sneaky about it.
He sighs, squeezing his eyes shut and stretching his arms above his head. "I just...you know, it was my uniform..." he trails off, leaving the rest unsaid, but Eunsook knows exactly what he means.
She reaches up toward his hand, pressing his fingers into the damp grass, twining hers with his. She doesn't know what to say to make him feel better, so she runs her free hand down his arm, hoping to comfort him through touches. She has to dodge a nasty looking bruise near the inside of his elbow though, and it makes her clench her teeth in anger.
"I really hate it," he says after a few minutes, voice unsteady. "It permeates everything and I can never get away from it, a-and I can't ever just be h-happy because something always reminds me a-and-" he chokes out, not bothering to finish his thoughts, probably because he can't get them in order.
Eunsook still doesn't know what to say-she knows he doesn't want to hear "I'm sorry."-and so she squeezes his hand gently, leaning over the last bit to press soft kisses to his cheek. The droplets against his skin are more warm than they are cold-more tears than rain, and she can almost feel her heart break in her chest.
What did he ever do to deserve this?
