Misuse of Firearms in Fanfiction and Literature

May 27, 2011 17:27

I have read many a fanfic, not just in the Supernatural fandom, as well as many a professionally edited and published novel where the characters use some kind of weaponry, mainly firearms. Which, generally speaking, I love. There is almost nothing I like more than a bad ass m*ther f*cker with a big ass gun kicking ass and taking names. What I can’t ( Read more... )

Had to read this, glad I did. While I knew the basics of guns, I would definitely need to do the research. This was informative and with a good sense of humor. So yeah, I learned a few interesting things on a Friday night and now I need a glass of wine to counteract the effect or something dire may happen. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for reading. I'm glad you found in entertaining as well as educational. That was the main reason I wrote it. Hope you wine kept your head from exploding.

I'm glad I haven't had the misfortune of trying to read such stories or watch episodes of shows with such ridiculous terminology failure. I was watching old episodes of the BBC Robin Hood a while ago. Ms. Marian suffered a stab wound in the torso, almost died, and the next day she was up and running about... Needless to say, that sort of stopped my watching cold. This running around was compounded by some other stupidity which would constitute severe spoilers; so, I shall refrain from sharing. In other words, I feel your pain. There is a limit to the suspension of disbelief.

Totally. I can suspend my belief like nobodies business... but I have my limits. I grew up around guns, and there are some mistakes I just can't read/see without cringing. I will probably never watch that show (I got twenty minutes into the first ep before quitting), but it baffles me that professional work can still have such idiocy in it. I've read books, published and edited books, about cowboys and gunslingers that one silly mistake almost completely ruins the magic.

Rifles and shotguns sound different, too. Rifles CRACK, and shotguns BOOM.

Haha! That's so true. They almost kick different too. But whats interesting is that different calibers of gun and ammunition sound different and feel different.

Haha! I'm not offended! I wrote it kind of sarcastic/humorously on purpose. I'm glad that you liked it and understood its purpose.
