The related issue is that a strong argument could be made that the government should be pumping money into the economy. Freezing the salaries of federal workers -- or even just making an announcement like this, regardless of whether it's actually carried through -- generally means that most of them will end up holding back on Xmas shopping this year.

I'd be happy to share the sacrifice. Unfortunately my government job barely remembers to pay the cost of living increase each year. And with the way utility bills are going, their concept of "cost of living" doesn't match the increase bills that are the true "cost of living."

Tightening my belt just means that I won't put money into the economy on anything non-essential. Wait... doesn't that make the economy worse?
