I should be more annoyed that it's pissing it down right now given that today I'm actually working from home and can therefore watch the tennis but tbh I'm quite glad as it means I can actually do the bloody work I should be doing, which requires proper concentration and everything. Hence posting to lj. Am loving all the upsets though! Disappointed ( Read more... )

Stanislas the Manislas?

I suspect that this sobriquet is based on "Stan The Man," which was the nickname for American baseball player Stan Musial:

(whose given name was Stanislaw)

It is, yes, though I'm more going along with the longtime nicknames at the tennis board I frequent.

He looked good against Seppi despite nearly effing it up at the end!

He plays Wawrinka next...then Lopez or Baghdatis. Anyone could be the semi-finalist, of that lot.

Looking at that interview the q is: how many of the Russians are proper Russians, as in did they all get their education in Russia? I had an impression that most of them -- like Maria -- went to US academies.

I liked how Alla got incentive to beat her bcz she was angered by Sharapova's outfit. This doesn't happen in the men's, no one has passed comment on Fed's jacket.

I caught the Safin match. Good on him for keeping it together, hoping he'll get to a SF showdown with Fed and then he'll have a chance, not much of a chance, but a chance...

Quite a few a born-and-raised-and-trained in Russia - Dementieva, Safina, Myskina, Zvonareva, I think Chakvetadze too.

Kudryavtseva, Kleybanova and Sharapova went to the US; Kuznetsova went to Spain, Petrova went to Poland. Don't know about any of the others. But Sharapova's the only one who's really been perceived to have lost her Russian-ness - she didn't play the Moscow tournament for years after she emerged, she didn't play Fed Cup until this year (a move generally assumed to be made only to secure her Olympics place). The celebrity/fashion factor is related to this.

I've seen lots of people annoyed by Fed's outfits (which are really up himself tbh! but obv he can get away with it) but more commentators/the press/fans on forums, can't remember any comments from players. Which is their problem, really, too deferential to him.
