Tomorrow, July 23, would have been my son, Alex's, 32nd birthday. Every year on his birthday I use to tell him the story of the day he was born. About how he was to have been born at home, about the midwife being with me during the day as we strolled around the neighborhood, did breathing exercises, talked. About how, once full labor started, it was not progressing as fast as a 2nd childbirth was expected to. About having to call an ambulance as complications developed. About me telling the EMTs that if they didn't allow the midwife to come with us I was not going! About how wonderful midwife Kate was as she coached me saying "don't push, don't push. If baby is in trouble you're the best incubator we have on board" and instructed the EMTs (they said they learned a lot from her that day about managing an unmedicated delivery in the back of their rig) during our dash toward the hospital 25 miles away. He came into the world in a special and unique way ... so when he died he had to leave in a special and unique way.... because he was indeed a very special and unique person. His ashes were launched from one of his rockets and dispursed to the winds over two of his very favorite places in the world - a rocket launch site in the middle of a pasture in Brothers, Oregon and over the Black Rock Desert just outside of Gerlach, Nevada during one of the big national rocket launches that he loved so much. The first launching was just family and friends ... the second was attended by hundreds of people many of whom were his friends - though most did not know the ashes were dispursed that day the officiators did say some wonderful things and honored Alex for his contributions to their favorite hobby.... the creation of high power "Extreme" rockets. Each rocket was launched with ceremony and traditions carried out - a little box of remembrances collected from friends and family went up too as did an old Barbie doll who rode on the nose cone
