This Would Be More Convincing If I Cited Primary Sources

Things much less crawl-into-a-hole-and-die possibly. Or rather, could still quite happily crawl into a hole and die, it seems a reasonable reaction to, um, everything, but now there are more options. Some of them might even be viable. Am mildly antsy due to lack of concreteness on anything/most things, but a lot of that should start to firm up in a ( Read more... )

I am going to say here that my dislike for The Twin Dilemma doesn't have anything to do with Six, any more than my dislike for many of the other serials in the Six era? The secondary characters are obnoxious and the plot is WTF and Peri is Peri-without-Erimem (I have only just discovered Eye of the Scorpion, forgive me, I am high on 'Peri is so awesome with Erimem!' right now). But I don't think the manner of Six's regenerative trauma has anything to do with my reasons for disliking it, and I also think that it isn't my absolute least favorite serial in all the world. I actually liked that they made it a rough regeneration, because seeing a companion have that tough of a time with their Doctor always makes for a fascinating story. In conclusion, Six is always love, even when other things about his serials are not.

My two cents: now you have them.

Your two cents are always a good thing to have!

Aha I should have disconnected those two sentences more, because I feel there are many valid reasons for disliking Twin Dilemma that don't have to do with Six, but also many valid reasons for liking it etc etc. *grins* The part where I rambled about Six was more what I ended up thinking on.

I think making it a rough regeneration and then carrying that on was interesting? I just think fandom's reaction to it is as well? I tend to think 'Peri and Six don't get on' is a super simplistic way to minimise or legitimise what often comes from other issues? (I am not in any way saying you are doing this btw - just something I have encountered with others?) I do think the execution is problematic though? Like, having Peri freak out makes sense esp. initially, and I really like the idea of over the course of Six's run - or any Doctor's run - having a companion who is snarky/disapproving/can do a touch of derision? But esp. in Twin Dilemma when the audience is uncertain how we should be treating ( ... )

PERI AND ERIMEM THEY ARE TOTES OTP. And the only pairing that will ever make me want cutesy pairing names. Perimem is kind of inevitable, in that particular case. Peri/Eri. IT IS THE BEST FEMMESLASH I am enamored. Hardcore. And if you know where to find good examples for reading, please please point me in the right direction because. THE. BEST.

I do think there's plenty of Twin Dilemma analysis to be done that nobody does, you are so right there! But let's face it, the same can be said of 95% at least of all Old School Who, and Six in particular. Terror of the Vervoids: the Doctor's first genocide, possibly? IIRC? Gawd, that's gotta leave a mark, and nobody talks about it much. Which is bullshit, especially because Terror is actually quite good, IMHO, probably my personal favorite of the Six era. Four, who certainly does get plenty of attention--I've never seen a serious attempt to trace the changes in his character from beginning to end, and there definitely are plenty. Three is a vastly different Time Lord with Liz ( ... )

Should I spend more time keeping up with journals and less whining about essays and looking at you? Clearly not. Still. Damn I agree with so much of this. Here are my unedited, early morning ramblings before I run off to class.

I loved your comparisons to Seven, mostly because I think their regeneration eps are most similarly structured, the TD/Castrovalva ones are like shooting water under the bridge. I think part of it might also be the presence of a Villain to shift the majority of the blame to. Yes, of course, the Rani/the Master didn't make the Doctor do these things, but they are there as a concrete, familiar Big Bad who can distract somewhat from the Doctor's actions.

As for Peri well-- Look a Amy, look at Peri, look at Amy, look back to Peri-- sadly she will not be given that level of focus or development in fandom, despite starting off with a much richer, existent background, set of interests, characterization etc ( ... )
