My holiday weekend was not too bad. I went to my friend Erin's 25th birthday hoo-hah, which was pretty fun. Erin was sweet and funny and awesome as always; that girl has to break up with her bpyfriend and gio out with me, heh. Nah; never happen. Oh and although this might seem lame to you people who don't know I never drink alcohol; I actually did ( Read more... )

Yeah, that's the problem I've had with most martial arts movies, the fights are fun but the dialogue is boring.

Woo, drinking! Bah, I stopped that after I turned 21 mostly, I do like vodka though, or gin. I got all drinking/parties out of my system before I turned 21 I think. :)

The ones that are getting released in america now are the ones that try to be a little too literate and forget that their reason for being is the fight scenes. Call it the CT,HD effect. Hero was fine, and iron monkey was good, though i think that one got an american run simply because it was on the shelf around the time CT,HD hit it big.
I liked House of Flying Daggers, but it did drag at times, and the martial arts weren't exactly expert stuff. The ending was good though.
White Dragon is much the same way. I'll lay odds that one gets and american run sometime next year.

Best marital arts movie = Mortal Kombat.

I fully await my asskicking. But.. it's got Scorpion, therefore it is the best martial arts movie ever. He is one of my crushes, ever since I first heard "Get over here!" in the game. :)

I pretend the second one didn't exist.

as do i.

don't worry, i won't kick too hard. Honestly, i liked mortal kombat. after the travesty that was the street fighter movie, mortal kombat was surprisingly good. It learned from the mistakes of street fighter, namely, if you're going to make a movie about a video game with no plot other than people fighting each other, it's a good idea to hire actors that an actually fight. Mortal kombat did this, street fighter didn't. Annihilation didn't either...
and scorpion was pretty cool.

But i've seen better. I imagine different people look for different things when they watch martial arts movies. I myself like movies with a lot of legwork. Anyone can throw convincing punches with a little training, but you have to know your stuff to do convincing kicking. Besides, i like to study their technique. my top three at the moment: Knockabout, Operation: Scorpio, and the original Drunken Master.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a bad movie. It was a bit slow in places, but it wasn't bad at all.
