Just give him time, he'll come around. My cat was initially a stray (we took in the mother who gave birth to three kittens off in a field but thankfully we were able to find them and brought mother and babies inside to raise) and she didn't always act like the loving cat I'd expect, but I'd not trade the time I had with her for anything. Just keep doing what you're doing, it sounds like it'll be just fine.
The kitten ought to come around to Tyler eventually as well. I was fairly young when we got our kittens and they were shy around us, but as all of us aged we formed a close bond. Given you don't know what happened to 'Kitten' between his coming into the world and forcing his way into a home, he could have very well been traumatized by humans.

Glad to hear they seem to be getting along quite well so far.
