Once again, my urge to code up something on the spur of the moment is foiled by the fact that university's PeopleSoft applications, being the spawn of demonic forces, are taken offline from midnight to 7 AM in order to prevent them from summoning the dead gods of Earth.

And you are trying to get me to think you are not the devil?

Why does complaining about a side effect of Peoplesoft's obviously infernal origins make me the devil?

Has the University ever given a good reason for why they take all their online shit offline for seven hours out of every twenty-four? I mean, of course the whole Internet shuts down overnight for everybody, right?

Hmm... you need to replace the < and > in your with < and > respectively or it just doesn't show.
Also, the logic in your subject could apply equally well to Holden. But has Holden ever denied it...?

I have no idea why the University takes down its PeopleSoft apps overnight. Possibly because much of the maintianance that they do his embarassingly manual, and thus this way they have seven hours to clear out no longer active job postings and post up new ones?
Not all of the university's webapps sleep for the night, though. UW-Angel, for all its other faults, only goes offline once a month for scheduled maintainance. Which, considering that for a number of courses it's the only way to get assignments or messages from the prof, is a very good thing.

I understand. There are things to be done, like registering for classes or checking one's financial statements, that really require a 24-hr system, but like yours, since our system is also Peoplesoft, it closes at midnight and re-opens at 7 on weekdays, and runs for even less hours on the weekends, when those things might be really necessary.

I have no interest in coding for it, though. The dead gods are already awakened and consuming the bureaucracy as we speak.

There are always more dead gods to be awakened, and I don't think the university administration want the competition. No sane, human mind could have come up with the architecture of Needless Hell, er, Needles Hall, the administrative building.

I'll have to take your word for it. And while there are more gods to be awakened, I don't think any of us are in the particular frame of mind to continue to do so. Peoplesoft is Evil for their hours of operation.

You'll find no argument from me on that.

It is somewhat consoling to know that nightly downtime is a feature of Peoplesoft and not just another symptom of the university's ineptitude. They still get blame for chosing to use Peoplesoft, though.
