Tonight I discovered (rediscovered?) that I have an 80 GB drive sitting in my computer, all nicely formatted, that I haven't been using. The extra space is nice, but since I wasn't really running out before, I have no idea what I'm going to use it for.

I submitted my proposal today for Machine Learning. It was a bit more buzz-word bingo than I'd ( Read more... )

Dang! I also want a Macbook. Apparantly, I'll be able to get access to that thing called "Money" once I'm done at university after which I'd be able to buy one.

This of course assumes there are still jobs in computing that have not been shipped of to India at that stage of course.

Speaking of "lack of money" and "want hardware", you're saying you forgot about a disk that has rather more capacity than my pile of disks combined?

The 80 GB had gotten lost in the shuffle when I got the current main disk of 300 GB. It was my main disk until I got a 300 GB drive, at which point the 300 replaced the 80, which moved into the spot of the 40 which is now in my closet. Since the 300 could hold the 80 with lots of room to spare, there wasn't (and still isn't) much need for it, so it didn't get assigned to any mount points.

Are you taking machine learning this term? It looks like an awesome course, I intend to take it at some point. Is your proposal for a research project?

I'm taking ML this term, and it's an interesting course, although I'm finding it a bit slow at times. The proposal is for an end-of-term project (mandatory for the grad students, optional for undergrad) that changes the mark weighting for the course from 30% assignments, 70% final, to 30% assignments, 30% project, 40% final. I'd rather not have all of my eggs in one basket, especially when that basekt is on the same day as another, with another basket two days before and another two days after.
