In Praise of Limits

In our world today, especially if you live in the United States, it's easy to be so caught up in the proverbial Rat Race that you forget to take a break. I don't mean kicking back of an evening, melted in front of the TV, or prowling the Internet reading posts from friends and the latest news brouhaha. I don't mean a Stay-cation, where you ( Read more... )

vacation, limits, healthy living

Just meditatively watching the water change its colors, textures and sounds is so healing.
I miss my parents summer house where I would sit on the bluff and just absorb the light and air and sounds.
And walking where one is not focused on the end of the walk and is just surrounded bu the feel of the ground underfoot, and the feel of the passing air and the various scents.
I walked that beach for two miles one inky black night when the only light came from an occasional luminescent jellyfish at the waters edge. I learned that I could know where I was from the sounds the feel of the beach and that I could feel where bulkhead walls were without touching them.

You are braver than I am--I hesitate to walk at night when a jellyfish might be waiting on the beach! It sounds beautiful, and meditative.

These were the nonstinging little oval ctenophores. And I generally stayed a bit away from the waters edge at night. Never knew what would wash up.
Before bottle recycling night walking could be really hazardous. Got a gigantic cut in the foot through my sneaker sole back in my teenage years. It was amazing how quickly the amount of broken glass on the beach decreased.

You're right--bottles and cans disappeared. Our nemesis were pop tops and fish bones!

That sounds so much like my situation . . .

But we make a new plan and keep going.

I'm pretty sure that I'll live forever . . . Right?

Yeah, we think we have to keep moving, like sharks, but sometimes we just need to rest.

Exactly. With my health challenges, I'm a big fan of the shark philosophy "Move or die" but sometimes we need to be still.

I'm glad you were able to drop (mostly) off the grid like that. Keep taking care of yourself.
