I gave up and got a twitter account because I realized that I had no current contact info for some of my friends and it seemed less obnoxious than facebook (among other things, I generally click out of a sign-up process if it requires me to specify a gender). I too am unimpressed with LJ, due to the problem about accessing it via WiFi or any other wireless method. [There are a lot of people, particularly in the U.S. and Canada, who have to rely on a wireless link just to get to the Internet At All. Given the cost of stringing wire/cable links and other issues, the Third World also generally may rely on wireless links.]

I'm not on Twitter yet, but I also don't have a cell phone ... and will not get one till I get a stable job. Whenever that happens. :-/

Do they not have inexpensive pre-paid cell phones in Canada? Here in Oregon, I have one from T-Mobile where I paid $30 for the phone and $100 for 1000 minutes that don't expire for a year. I use it so I have a number to put on business cards and such for my pet-sitting and math tutoring.

I don't read twitter from my phone (since text messages cost ten cents each and my phone doesn't do web browsing) although I do have it set up so I can post to twitter from it if I want to. I just use the website when I'm online anyway. Two of my good friends no longer bothered to update LJ when they move but post on twitter regularly, so it seemed like time to get an account.
