How did you pick your child's name?

We had Matthew Jacob picked for ages (years, even) just because we liked both names.

Then when I was about three weeks away from my due date I read the book Deep End of the Ocean (much better than the movie). The little boy who was kidnapped in the story was Ben. There was something about the mother turning in frantic circles, shouting Ben! that resonated with me.

I looked over at Jay who was sitting at the computer and said, ``What about Benjamin?"

Jay was opposed at first because he thought a three syllable name didn't go well with his last name. But I argued that he'd go by Ben, which did sound nice with his name.

Jay agreed and we changed it from Matthew Jacob to Benjamin Ryan.

The Ryan came from one of the boys I used to babysit. Although for ages we told people we were going to name him Benjamin Franklin or Colby which is only funny if you know Jay's last name.

Do you ever look at Ben and see his father? When you do, if you do, how do you not hate his existance a little bit, I mean, isn't he sort of like a 24 hr reminder of the asshole for life? Or maybe you just hate that you had kids with Jay. I know my mom thinks that if she'd had us without dad, that we'd still be us even without the genes and such. I'm rambling but I KNOW that Ben is so much more than that! So many wonderful things!!! But I was just wondering, sometimes, if he isn't that too. And if so, how do you cope with it?

I see Jay in Ben every single day. They look very alike and Ben even has a lot of Jay's mannerisms. That said, I've never looked at Ben the way you've described ( ... )

no, probably not. mostly because i'm lazy, and not writing anymore which makes me poorly motivated. but! i've begun moving it over to a fic journal (ficlicks if you're interested) there's not much there yet. ref: lazy and poorly motivated for same.

but thank you for the comment. it made me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

No. I'm mostly happy - content is probably the word. And I think content can be a dangerous thing, it doesn't motivate change.
