Aussie Cricket Commentators

Aussie cricket commentators are just as annoying as English ones! They seem to be inventing a new version of English. I'm watching highlights of the second one day international between Aus and WI; Darren Sammy took a great catch and the commentator screamed that 'he's absolutely smoked that'. Methinks it's a case of saying all the right words ( Read more... )

Pffft. They're *Channel 9 cricket commentators*. What do you expect? We've come a long way since the days of McGilvray and Arlott.

I'm always just thankful when they don't start throwing faeces at the camera.

Is Channel 9 really that bad? Sky Sports commentators drive me up the wall. I've been know to mute their drivel and listen to TMS on the radio whilst watching the telly.

Oh, Channel 9 is definitely that bad. Oddly, one of the better ones is Mark Nicholas - ex Hampshire, I think? Tony Greig was appalling - racist, chauvinistic, inaccurate. Ian Healey's all right. They used to annoy the crap out of me when Steve Waugh (my hero) was captain, because of course he wasn't 'in' with Chappell and co, so they'd begrudge him any praise. It got to a ridiculous point.

They have improved since they got more recent players in. But it's still pretty dire. And there's talk of Shane Warne getting offered a guernsey next year. Ugh.

Nine are deliberately out of sync with the radio, so although out radio commentary is infinitely superior, watching one while listing to the other is maddening.

What's Steve Waugh doing these days? He doesn't seem to try and hog the limelight, unlike some of his contemporaries.

I just wish all cricket commentators were as good as Richie Benaud. I grew up with him and Jim Laker commentating for BBC TV, along with Tony Lewis and one or two others. Far better than the current lot.
