Y'see, I was assuming that either (a) his owners used to live in the block and had either moved or decided to no longer keep him, or (b) he still technically has owners but they chuck him out at night (and mornings, and err perhaps don't feed him that much).
It hadn't crossed my mind that (c) he might have started out a way away from here and wandered. He did seem to be clinging to the building, but that's not a 100% guarantee.
I know someone whose cat (mostly an indoor cat who wasn't used to the big wide world) got out and disappeared for four months, and eventually turned up at a shelter miles away when someone found him and took him to have his chip scanned.
He certainly doesn't seem like a cat that's been a stray for a long time*, but it doesn't feel like he's been living well for the past few weeks. He's not got a collar, but then neither of our pair have either (usefulness vs chance of them getting it hooked on something).
Vets tomorrow.
*Unlike Grumpy, our local tom who will occasionally headbutt my legs for food if I happen to be out in the garden, and who will then eat the food with the relaxed attitude of an old geezer enjoying a pub lunch.
Not quite - he's entirely ginger rather than ginger and white, and the hair around his face is shorter.
The earliest vet appointment was Monday evening, so he's spent the weekend with us. He's just about got to the point of not emptying any and every food bowl put in front of him, and he knows what litter trays and scratching posts are. Still has his bollocks, so the spare room is now smelling rather male.

(if there isn't a worried owner, three cats are still a very long way from 58 cats ;-) )

I hope the vet can help figure out where he came from. Failing that, maybe try some "Found cat" posters on local lampposts?
