Witty, playful, light, romantic - yes I enjoyed most of Jane Austen's books. But it was the period they were written in, by an author of that period, her mindset showing through so clearly, that I found so intriguing. The luck of being born to wealth and influence obviously bothered her, but at the same time impressed her. The virtue of lady-life behavior (Kitty's elopment in Pride and Prejudice, for example, was to her a shocking thing) that today would be considered prudishness in a young woman.
You really don't like Jane Austen? And yet strangely, I feel we've had this discussion before. *g*
