This fic is my new guilty pleasure. How does Gallifrey even translate so perfectly into Western? I think I like Anarchist!Romana better than regular Romana because her bitter/brittle part is amped up to the max and her dynamic with Brax is delightfully sharp and mean. Brax's point of view is AWESOME and he seems to talk entirely in aphorisms, and somehow gambler-plus-conman is the perfect way to translate the things Brax normally does (politics, theater and breaking the laws of time) into this genre. Leela with a cause is always great (much better than Leela just being Romana's loyal bodyguard), and Russian-immigrant Narvin is also... what Narvin would be if he was a Western villain/anti-hero. I could only ask for this to be longer and have more plot, but then there might not be an open ride-into-the-sunset ending.
Thank you! Gallifrey has pretty portable characters, I think, especially Brax and Narvin. The western genre saved me from having to rewrite Leela too too much. In the 60's gangster AU this nearly was, she was a waitress. Uh.
You're right about the vague plot/happy ending thing; I couldn't bring myself to kill anyone off, and also couldn't quite muster the word count to justify it. SEQUEL, MAYBE.
