I pretty much hated it. But first, here are a few things I liked
- I liked Sulu forgetting to take off the parking brake.
- I like Chekov being excited that he could do things and then being a bit annoyed that he was left in charge.
- I liked Old Spock, and I quite liked Pike. Bones was quite good too.
There's lots I hated.
I hated that it was SO LONG and mostly filled with endless pointless scenes. Kirk driving a car/riding a motorcycle. Kirk running through the planet of snow chased by monsters. Scotty in the water tank thing. The endless begining with Kirk's father dying and his mother giving birth (what was she doing on a starship?) And so on.
I hated what they did to Uhura. Everyone one my flist who seemed impressed, but I'm not sure why. I mean, I like that they told us she was a language expert, and they told us she translated that message from the Klingons, but she could have actually, you know, done something. She was a romantic interest. She was cross at Kirk for flirting with her, and then she was sad near Spock. That was her entire role. And they made her strip in front of Kirk, because she didn't know he was there! Oh, so funny!
I also can't believe they didn't put another female character in. Even if they wanted to keep the orginal crew the same, the crew we saw at the begining could have had some female characters who actually had a point, other than being a mother. The Romulans could have had some females around. ANYTHING. They didn't even try to make that better.
Also, they kept the miniskirts. FUCK OFF. In the first series of TNG they kept the miniskirts for extras, but made both men and women wear them. But no, in this film, men wore trousers and women wore miniskirts. (There may have been women wearing trousers. It's hard to know, when there were so few women on the screen.)
They killed Spock's mother, for no apparent reason, other than so Kirk could make Spock angry and sad, so that Kirk could take command. Oh, she was killed so that two male characters could advance their storylines. Yay!
Not only has the future failed at getting computers to understand accents that aren't American, Captain Pike couldn't remember Chekov's name, and did that awful thing people do with forgien names, because obviously they all sound the same and you can't possibly figure out how to pronounce them. *headdesk*
Everything was shiny and rather brightly lit, and we had lots of cameras swooshing and being blurry and I would have liked less of that. It just didn't look like Star Trek. I quite liked the sets, but they belonged in another universe, with a new story, and new characters, and everything. But we're not allowed new things anymore, we just get remakes and sequels/prequels. I can't believe they took Star Trek, made it an AU, threw out the stuff they didn't like or that didn't fit, (except, of course, the gender roles) and made this. Why didn't they just make something new?
Also, was there no one better qualified to take command than Kirk? I'm sure at the begining, the man who couldn't speak Romulan was addressed as a Lieutent, and Sulu and Chekov are both Ensigns, who probably outrank a cadet. It was just weird and odd, and, on top of everything else, I wasn't really willing to suspend belief about it. There were other things that I was annoyed by, but I realise I would have been willing to overlook them, had all these other things not annoyed me.
I got a bit carried away. It was kind of awful. We went to Frankie&Benny's afterwards to have food and vent a bit.
