Six months later, and Alice does what she can. She gets up and goes to work. She buys a flat, but still looks after the old house on weekends. She can't live there, but the idea of someone else taking it is unacceptable. She even enrolls in a few classes at a nearby university, for fear of idle time on her hands ( Read more... )

Jenny was halfway between Galt and Proteus when someone appeared on her ship.

That was strange.

People didn't generally appear on her ship. It wasn't really big enough for the TARDIS, and she didn't know anyone that had teleporting abilities. Oh, sure, she'd been laying around with various setting on her ship, tweaking things here and there, but she hadn't - oh.

Hm.

Jenny looked at the woman (a human!) as the woman looked up from her folder. She spoke English! Like Donna!

"What was it last time?"

"What was it last time?"

Alice, ever the pragmatist, took quick stock of her surroundings before bothering to answer. Wherever she was, it didn’t look like any government facility she’d even seen. Which, considering how relatively few of those Alice had seen, wasn’t unexpected. And the girl - very blonde, very young - seemed to steering a-

Oh, Jesus. Were they on a sodding ship?

“Are we in a ship? Did you actually transport me onto your ship?” Alice sounded far more incredulous than scared. “There are laws. I know you people don’t care about that sort of thing, but they do exist. You can’t just pull people from their homes whenever it suites you.”

"Laws?" Jenny blinked. "What?"

She stood up and walked over to the woman. "Hi there. Technically there aren't laws here. It's my ship so my laws. If we were on a planet, maybe, sure, but we're not. Though I guess you come from a planet, don't you? What are the laws on your planet?"

Jenny thought about it for a second. "Wait! I didn't do anything!"

Well, that was brilliant. Not only was Alice some strange woman’s captive, subject to whatever her sense of law was, but said strange woman had to go and be cheerful about it.

“You call kidnapping a woman ‘not doing anything’?” Alice wasn’t surprised, exactly. Her body language transitioned from offended to resigned. Fact was, she didn’t have the upper hand right now. She didn’t even have a gun, for all the good it had done her last time.

At least this time around, there wasn’t really anything they could take from her.

“Listen,” Alice said, looking tired. “I don’t know what he’s got on you, or what you’ve got on him. And I honestly don’t care. He’s not in my life anymore-I’m nothing to him, he’s nothing to me. If you want leverage, you need to look elsewhere.”
