There should be a social networking site where you can meet people who fit certain demographic criteria, thereby rounding out your circle of friends so you look good when photos are taken of your birthday party. You could want a friend of a particular race, or a gay friend you can point at defensively when accused of homophobia, or whatever ( Read more... )

Would you include relative wealth, occupation, personal interest, etc. in your demographics? Sometimes those sorts of things could be more useful, like if you have a great idea for a TV show, you can look for a TV producer friend. Although I expect the fanboy/girl abuse of that aspect could be a problem-- people bombarding Joss Whedon with love-letters or something.

I think the motives of wanting to have a rich friend or one who produced TV shows would be a little too obviously ulterior. Even if the usual reason to want a black friend in particular is none too admirable, at least it involves actually wanting a friend; if you have a great idea for a TV show, you wouldn't have to be *friends* with the producer to get it going.

Well, a poor person having a rich friend maybe in it just to get some cash, but a rich person might want to be able to flag some poor people as friends so that (s)he could say (s)he connects with the 'common people'.

Hmm, there is that. But you'd have to allow either only one-way flagging (rich people can hunt for poor friends, poor people can't look explicitly for rich friends) or deal with the fact that the poor people may have ignoble motives.
