Side by Side
There was chaos around them. Sirens screeched in the air. Ambulances were parked and open ready to collect the casualties. Law enforcement officers, soldiers and Agents rushed around. Shouting and sirens punctuated the shocked sadness of those who stood outside the burning building.
Abby stood amongst the chaos, a blanket thrown over her. She and Gibbs had been among the first to be rescued and among the luckiest. She was in shock and Gibbs only had a few cuts and bruises. Gibbs had left her by the ambulances as he joined the search party. He had kissed her on the forehead and had run off to find the others.
She tried to reign in her mind, and told herself not to worry. It had been what felt with hours and she had not seen any of them. She waited patiently, for Tony to rush out with a movie reference, for Ziva to cover her nose because of the smell, and for McGee to appear saying something. She waited ever so patiently, but patience had never been one of her virtues.
Then she saw the rescue crew pulling a stretcher out of the wreckage. She recognised the unconscious figure on the stretcher. McGee. McGee was still and silent. His face smeared with scarlet blood. Glass shards covered his pale face.
"Timmy," she screamed as the tears she had been holding back came so close to falling. She rushed to the ambulance they were loading McGee into. Not Timmy, she prayed. She couldn't lose Timmy.
"Ma'am you need to stay back," one of the paramedics told her as he put up his rather muscular arm to halt her.
"Tell me he will be okay," Abby cried as McGee moved further into the ambulance.
"We can't make any promises," the paramedic said sadly, "but we're optimistic."
"Abby," a muffled voice mumbled as McGee stirred in the back of the ambulance.
Before the muscular paramedic had a chance to stop her, Abby jumped into the back of the ambulance. She was not going to leave his side.
