Oh Those Silly Big Life Decisions

I'm very strongly considering applying for the position that's opening up in my group. I've had numerous people tell me I should and I know that my coworkers think I should ( Read more... )

I say do it on the first, and don't do it for the second. And the only reason why I say no for the second one is because you make it sound like that's going to be the popular opinion to have, and well, I want to be popular. Lol.
As for the job thing, I'm not sure why graduating later is even a consideration as it won't set you back as far as this job is concerned, and this is the job you want. What would be the benefit in getting your degree sooner if it meant not having the job you desire? I mean the whole reason behind college is to prepare you to work where you want to work, and taking this job would mean you get both, even if the degree comes a little later than you expected.

Haha.. well, a lot of people are worried its a bad idea because of my feelings for Chris C.. but he's also one of my best friends. He also has similar quirks to mine when it comes to keeping things clean, so I know I could room with him. Plus I've spent a lot of time around him and know that wouldn't be an issue for me.

The only problem is, of course, the whole "getting over" him thing. And no one ever said that thing was easy and I recognize its an issue so its not that big of a deal to me.

You raise very valid points about graduating later and work. I've looked at it in a similar picture but not exactly like that.

This way of looking at it is even more blunt- the purpose of going to college is to get the dream job. If you're going to pass up the dream job for school, then why are you going to school at all? Ya know? Not that I'm trying to steer you in any direction or anything...

I think my dream job would be google. Second would be this job.. so you make a very good point.

btw, i seriously miss hanging out with you. it's been a while since we've hung out :\

Yeah, I forgot to mention those. Those two are big ones, especially the retirement stuff.

Thanks!

I think Chris will be a good fit for you as a roommate. And I think the job will pwn. jk651 is right about the degree consideration; if you're getting a kickass job, why does it matter when you get the degree?

Yeah, I think he is too. I guess the only major concern is if I didn't finish my degree.. but I have plenty of people who would kick my ass if I did that (like scs_11 below.

As a completely neutral observer

(brief pause so you can kick my ass)

I think you may as well go ahead with Chris, 'cause you've already decided to.

As for the job . . . well, you know my opinion. But I'm going to chime in the TIAA-CREF stuff. Knowing what the salary range is and that U-M matches 2:1, if you put in the full 5% you'll get $10,000 in the account. Invested in diversified high-risk/high-growth stuff, you should expect a 6-year doubling. You'll get seven doublings in the 42 years before you retire. That comes to $1,280,000.00. From the first year. Double that if you contribute for two years.

Also it's harder that hell to get into a good technical position at the U. Work a few years, get that seed into the TIAA/CREF stuff, go part-time, and pursue a MSc on the U's nickel. What's not to like about that?

Yeah. The TIAA-CREF stuff is very nice, but its all new to me so I'll have to learn a lot more about it.

Take it from someone who has been unable to find a decent job in the A2 area; if you can get a decent job in your field in the A2 area I would advise you to take it at almost any cost. School will still be there, and yes you can go part time and defer loan pay back. So, I say without a doubt, TAKE IT! I wish I could have found a decent job in the A2 area.

I don't know indepth what the situation is currently between you and Chris C so I can't really give you advice there. congrats on the new roommate!

Thanks! That's a good point, too.

As for the Chris C thing is, well, it hasn't changed much aside from the fact that he's been dating someone for a few months now.
