I think I'm just really bad at it ;_; or my sims are dumber than most, OR it was just bad luck. I've seen asylums go soooo much smoother than this, but my sims apparently can't survive on their own.

Aw, I'll go with bad luck, don't blame yourself. I remember reading the topic about this challenge on MTS and some players are lucky, for others, everyone dies on day 1, it's the beauty of asylums :D
