Greetings to all, and Happy Tolkien Reading Day! In honour of this auspicious occasion, I've finally gotten off my a**e and actually POSTED a response to THIS. Remember, back in the Dark Ages (okay, eight months ago), when estelanui suggested reading LotR aloud in other languages than English, and lbilover made a "Foreign Language Edition" post? Okay! Here's what I'd like for her to read (hope it's not too long!)

Beginning with 'My dear Frodo!' exclaimed Gandalf. 'Hobbits really are amazing creatures, as I have said before." until the end of the chapter.

That's amazing! Really well done! I love how Baggins is translated as Sacquet (and of course, les Sacquet de Besace can still be shortened to SB's!) And eleventy-one becomes undecante-un. *charmed* But my favourite was Je m’en vais. Je pars MAINTENANT. ADIEU! That somehow seems to have even more force than the original! Lovely, thank you! :))

Thanks muchly! I love the translation, too. But did you notice that he failed to translate "This was unexpected and rather difficult"? It's missing in the French -- and I don't trust my poor French to translate it myself. Any ideas?

I agree re: the end -- one can do a lot more with MAINTENANT's three syllables than one can with NOW. And ADIEU! is perfect in either language, I think.

My French is very rusty, so I'm glad you had the transcription. Hee, I love the list of names at the end, and this had me giggling:
Je ne connais pas la moitié d’entre vous à moitié autant que je le voudrais, et j’aime moins que la moitié d’entre vous à moitié aussi bien que vous le méritiez.
It's hard enough to work out in English, much less French! :D

Re: the list of names, I practiced that a LOT; I wanted it to flow. When we read the Book of Esther on Purim, the names of the ten sons of Haman (the villain) are supposed to be read in one breath. My goal was to read them like that... I didn't make it in one breath, but I didn't pause much, either...

I remember first reading the "compliment" as a child, and being stumped. It's hard in any language! *grins*
