I've been meaning to finish this up and post it for a good while now. Despite the subject and time of year, this isn't a New Year's resolution post. I started my weight-loss diet in October and have pretty much reached the point where I can declare it a success and write about it in case it will help anyone else out there ( Read more... )

Maybe I missed it somewhere, but how exactly do you know (or even estimate) how many calories you burn in a day?

I definitely have problems with portions...I tend to eat at least 2 bowls of pasta at dinner, for example. I'm really bad about it. :P

Two ways:
  1. to get an initial estimate there's a table provided in the book -- the web is also full of little CGI calculators, probably google for calorie estimate or something
  2. for the graphs I produce, I know how much I've eaten recently, and I know how fast I'm losing weight, so I just convert those to the same units (1 lb fat / day = 3500 kcal / day) and add, mainly as a sanity check.
