Is there an actual term for the phenomenon where some people's initial, honest, isolated impressions of X turn more and more negative based solely on it's increasing popularity? Like an inverse popularity curve that only afflicts people who let themselves get worked up over X being popular?

Because if there is it's very annoying. :|

I really liked ponchos until they suddenly became super fashionable and everyone had one. They were no longer 'unique' and became one of those tacky fashion items....

But they are not in fashion any more... and my love for them is returning...

Yes it's called "stop letting others opinions affect your own" syndrome. :p

I haven't had something I like turn into something I hate because of popular peoples opinions. The thing I like about it will still be there so it doesn't matter.

Then again retards being retards about X would mean anyone with any sense would keep their liking X to themselves to not be associated with the retards that like X.

So is there anything you're referring to here or are you just curious?

Books, comics, animations, games, Democrat presidential nominees, nothing particularly specific.

Ah.

My advice, stay off the big forums (like SA) for a little bit and stick to some of the smaller ones you go to.

SA isn't the problem and the problem isn't even a big one anyway, just observations in person over the years :P

I believe the term you're looking for is Goonitis, it's more common on the SA forums than just about anywhere else on the internet outside of anime forums.

It happens, just live with it.

I used to quite like manga. And then I found out it was popular amongst people that make star fox yaoi pictures.

I don't read manga anymore.

What I think I'm trying to say is this: Get out whilst you still can.
