Charities: who do you give to?

spacefem posted recently about the charities that she supports, which got me thinking about the charities we are involved in, and thought we really should do a better job at giving back.

These are in the order that we currently donate. My question is, is there a charity that you support or believe needs my support? Please throw a name out there for me to ( Read more... )

This is an interesting question! There are so very many things to support. Last year I donated to MSF, Because I Am A Girl/Plan Canada, Femme International (http://www.femmeinternational.org/), and I usually donate at least a registration fee to the Terry Fox Foundation (cancer research) but I was out of town during the race last year. Oops. We also donate our used clothing and household goods to a thrift shop that supports the Diabetes Association.

Now I'm inspired to find a more local cause to also support!

We donate our used clothing and household goods to a battered women/children organization. I forgot about that.

I believe in our local charities.

I give to Chicago Food Depository and Lurie's Children. No one should go hungry and Lurie was amazing to C.

I've also 'adopted' a child during the holidays from Children's Home + Aid.

Recently a friend had a stillbirth and she has turned the tragedy into trying to help other families by raising funds for CuddleCots. She has donated 3 so far, it's been amazing.

I think those are so important. Oftentimes, they are overlooked for bigger ones, but I think it's important to stay local. That's why I like supporting our local humane society and Bon Jovi's "soup kitchen" and our church, and a few others like that.

I donate to a mixture of national and local charities, including Planned Parenthood (health care for women), City Harvest (food pantries), Girls Write Now (mentoring girls of color who wish to be writers or journalists by trade -- of my friends and writers is a mentor for this program), We Read Together (a non-profit founded by my friend who is looking to empower young people through access to books and help with reading skills), and a couple of others.

I would like to donate to an organization to increase female literacy in third world countries, I just have to find the right one. I think reading/writing skills is so undervalued.
