My uni's wellness centre provides free counselling services, so I just emailed them to enquire as to their experience with working with transgender people/issues. While I am most certainly not the first transgendered person to attend my college, the counselor I was "assigned" as it were, was only slightly experienced in transgendered issues. However, she's proved to be REALLY helpful despite this, and has done her best to understand and be sympathetic towards my circumstances. She shows a genuine interest in my progress and we talk about it often.

So don't think that just because someone isn't well versed in LGBT doesn't mean they won't be willing to learn. Don't be afraid to try out a few counselors either. You gotta find one that you like and that you feel comfortable with.
