I am also appalled about the lack of proper sex ed in this country, and even more so by the efforts to reduce and redact whatever is out there right now. It is ridiculous and stupid! For whatever other failures SFUSD schools have, my sex ed was thorough and real! The same group of teen parents visited our sex ed classes throughout middle school and told us what it's really like!

well, there is "sex ed" - about which I don't know much insofar as BPS just because it usually happens earlier, and in health classes, and so much depends on the teacher, and, we have, like 100 schools where it would happen, but somehow I think it would be fairly appalling, yes.

My issue is with some larger social phenomena that occur along racial and socioeconomic lines. I am not purporting that I know how to fix the issues I see there, but I am talking about them to the students with whom I come into direct contact, for whatever its worth.

Standard sex ed wouldn't cover the questions you're addressing, but in my middle school, we saw the personal side of it, and the "making choices" side. Maybe it was because my school was on the lower side of the socioeconomic scale and on the "I'm the only white person" side of the racial lines that we got that kind of instruction. I think it was very effective and it would be nice if that happened in all schools.
