Southern Wolf thoughts - Part 1

May 03, 2010 12:32

Since I'm not likely to finish drawing the comic any time soon, nor am I one to write a full fic for it, I thought I'd write out notes about where I was planning on going with 'Southern Wolf'.

Lani and Ayumi

As far as I'd gotten in the story, Ayumi showed up at Sokka's door, where he'd been living almost as a hermit with Alfr-er Lani. Like Piandao, it was implied that Sokka would take on apprentices now and then. But Ayumi arrived during a blizzard and at a time that Sokka was reluctant to take on a new student. When Ayumi gives him the necklace carved with the wolf symbol, Sokka agrees to take her on.
Training starts at dawn, as Sokka takes Ayumi Polar Bear Swimming, (diving into freezing water in nothing but underwear) but when Ayumi refused to take her coat off and jump in, Sokka pushes her. He dives in too, and there'd be another flash-back panel of a younger Sokka (a la 3-Years-Gone). Ayumie notices that he seemed so peaceful under the water.
Meanwhile back at the farm - Lani receives another visitor: Katara. She's come with news that her daughter, Kaya (note: I had picked the name before we learned that it was her mother's name, but it seems to fit that she'd name her daughter after her mother) is getting married in the spring. Katara notices the carved necklace on the table and remarks to Lani, "So she's come, finally"
Before anymore can be elaborated, Sokka returns with a soaking Ayumi. He's given her his coat to wear, himself still stripped down.
Katara scolds him, and ushers Ayumi to the fire where she uses water-bending to dry the girl off. Sokka seems cold towards his sister, but she brings up the wedding, promising that Zuko and Toph would be there. She also adds that Ayumi is welcome to come.
After some training, Ayumi has dinner again just with Lani. In the distance, they can hear a wolf howl - it's the first time Ayumi's heard one.
"My mother used to tell me the story of why the Wolf howls at the moon," she tells Lani. (This part would have been illustrated in a sumi-e style) "Long ago there was a beautiful northern princess who's life had been a gift from the moon spirit. She met and fell in love with a brave southern warrior. But an evil imp-snake coveted the moon and swallowed it whole. The warrior fought bravely, but he couldn't cut the moon from the monster's gut. So the princess rose up and became the moon. The warrior cried after her, he howled so long that he became the wolf."

The ImpSnake
Lani remains silent for awhile, then comments that it's not entirely untrue. Since the readers already know the actual story of Yue and Zhao, I'd skip over it, but Lani would tell Ayumi the real story.

I'll post more later, but I've gotta head to work.
