Anyone good at kitchen design? Jay said that depending on price he's willing to let us remodel the kitchen (cabs and countertops/ backsplash) AND do the flooring in the house (it's all builder grade and 14 years old). If the kitchen is too much we'll go with just the floors throughout the house for now. Caveat: he doesn't want to help.

We went to our local kitchen place, gave the designer our list of musts and wants, then paid $500 for the design. Overall, it was $25,000 for our kitchen.

Ask around. Any local friends renovate their kitchens lately?

I've been to a flooring place ... not kitchen yet. I should do that though. It'd save me the headache of trying to make up my own mind! LOL!

I am terrible at kitchen design. We decided to do ours about 5 years ago - we went through all the cabinet schematics and picked a bunch of stuff out and then I halted the whole thing because I couldnt commit to what we had. Super cold feet. I hope you have better luck! I wish I had done ours and I could be enjoying it now :)

I would also recommend going to a kitchen design place. Or a cabinet maker place. When we built 4 years ago, we did everything custom. Before we'd even broken ground, we met with the company that custom made our cabinets throughout the house (kitchen, bathrooms, butlers pantry) and we went through everything we wanted from type of wood, look, trim, drawers, etc and designed everything. They were made at their location and delivered and installed unfinished, then we worked with another sub on the stain color. I'd definitely go with someone that designs kitchens a lot.

When we were building, I spent a lot of time on these boards...tons of people remodeling and I loved looking at their pics and reading for ideas. Here's a link to the kitchen forums.
