OMG I was just reading about Christopher Pike on a book blog yesterday! (And Foreveryoungadult.com just hilariously reviewed the first chapter of Flowers in the Attic by the way too!)
I loved, loved, loved Pike. My favorite was the first Remember Me, but I liked almost everything he wrote before he started churning out the vampire/supernatural sequels. Witch was awesome and the Final Friends trilogy! And Fall Into Darkness...and...and I just loved them all! Someday I'll go buy a boxset for nostalgia's sake!
Remember Me! And Fall Into Darkness! Was that the one they made into a made-for-TV movie starring Jonathan Brandis? I'm totally going back to that store and getting more Pike. I always liked him best, like he was being more provocative and dirtier than his contemporaries. I always felt like I should be scandalized by what I was reading, but that fact that I wasn't just made it more fun. Ahhh memories!
Yup that was with Brandis and the youngest daughter from Fresh Prince, Tatiana Ali!
I think he really was more provocative/dirtier than most YA of the time. He wrote about drugs and sex and abortion and murder--nothing was off limits. Compared to like Babysitters Club, Sweet Valley High, Cheerleaders, etc. he was hella racy.
I've never read anything by the authors you mention.
I too had the habit of reading books not entirely appropriate for my age when I was a kid. I used to take books from my mom's bookshelves. That's her fault for teaching me to read at a very young age. ;)
My mom and my sister had pretty great book collections, so I was always set to get into something I wasn't entirely sure I understood, but hey, I was reading. I think I take for granted that my mom taught me and my sister to read so young and that we always were read to and had access to so many books. Parents can be awesome sometimes. :)
