Summary: evolution of a love story
Notes: screams, so I kind of love them. :"> written listening to this song (among other things) on repeat.
Changmin grounds himself in logic, but anyone who really knows him knows that he's just a romantic at heart. He might not believe in fate or happily-ever-afters-for-all-eternity, but he does believe in love, and even if eternity doesn't exist for Changmin, the-rest-of-his-life does.
When he first meets Yunho, the older boy greets him with a warm handshake and even warmer smile.
It's not until years later that he presses his lips to Yunho's with sweaty palms and nervous laughter bubbling in his throat. Yunho kisses back, one hand wrapped around the nape of Changmin's neck. Changmin suddenly recalls that very first meeting - that very first smile - and thinks to himself that he might have fallen at first sight after all.

It takes them a while to figure everything out, to work out where they're standing and what they are to each other.
When they finally do, the first thing Changmin does it run back to his shared room. Deliriously happy, he marks the date on the calendar hanging on the wall - the date Yunho and Changmin became an us - and barely resists the urge to draw a heart into the space under the number.
Two days later, he notices an asterisk above the number that hadn't been there before. Leaning over, Changmin is greeted by a postscript written in familiar handwriting at the bottom of his calendar. That silly happy face Yunho loves to add after everything follows the two words.
Changmin can't stop smiling for the rest of the day, not even when Junsu finishes all of the donuts he'd been saving for dessert.
~
It's the one rare days they have off, and so they all pile into the car with Yunho at the wheels. When they get to the beach (the one inconveniently far out in the middle of nowhere that no one ever goes to), Junsu leaps out with a cry. The rest of them follow, and for one day, they're not Korea's award-winning idols or Japan's rising stars. They're just five boys, building sandcastles by the water and pushing each other into the ocean and laughing and laughing and laughing until throats are raw and hearts are bursting.
For lunch, they eat Jaejoong's homemade kimbap and kimchi fried rice they'd brought along. Junsu complains about the rice being too spicy (but eats it anyway), and Jaejoong whines in response about not being appreciated. Yoochun grins before tackling Junsu into the sand, food and all, and Junsu's surprised screech quickly turns into eunkyungkyung. Yunho laughs, face free of the stress that had been plaguing him for the last few weeks. To Changmin, it's the most beautiful sound he's heard in a long time.
He thinks he knows the name for this, the words for the way his palms get sweaty and his heart trips into doubletime. He's just not ready to say it out loud yet.
Later, when Changmin turns to grab more food, he finds Yunho looking at him.
"Hey," Changmin says quietly, the breath rushing out of his lungs all at once at the look in Yunho's eyes, but then Yunho pushes Jaejoong to the side and moves over to slide into the spot beside Changmin.
"Hey yourself," he says, voice equally soft, and Changmin suddenly wants to lean over and kiss him.
He probably would've, if Jaejoong hadn't chosen that moment to collapse onto Changmin's lap, laughing at the sight of Junsu tripping over nothing and falling into the water. Junsu gives an indignant shout and drags Yoochun in with him, and the two of them end up looking like drowned rats. Changmin looks up and sees the amusement dance across Yunho's lips. He unconsciously grips the hand wrapped around his tighter, and thinks to himself, if this can last forever, I'll never want anything else again.
~
Yunho presses him into the bed, hands warm and impossibly gentle, and Changmin lets him, every touch burning into his skin. He wishes he could say something, wishes he could convey exactly how much Yunho means to him, but words have never really been his forte, and every time he tries, the sounds get caught in his throat.
"Changmin-ah," Yunho murmurs, interrupting Changmin's thoughts, breath just a puff of air against his collarbone. Changmin shivers and looks down at the man he could happily spend the rest of his life with (if only he knew how to tell him that) and raises an eyebrow in question.
"Stop thinking so much," Yunho tells him, lips curving, and leans forward to kiss him.
Changmin had thought that when it came to Yunho, he couldn't possibly fall any harder. He discovers now that he'd been completely wrong.
Afterwards, they lie there for a long time without saying anything. Yunho is already mostly-asleep when Changmin suddenly props himself onto one elbow. His fingers draw idle patterns along the other's chest. Yunho opens one eye and peers at him for a second, leaning forward to brush a sleepy kiss against Changmin's left cheekbone before burrowing back into the covers, pulling Changmin further into his arms.
Changmin sighs and smiles, indescribably content. He turns and uses Yunho as a human pillow, conveniently resting his head against a shoulder.
He's almost asleep when he realizes the patterns he'd been tracing into Yunho's skin hadn't been patterns at all, but the three words he's been wanting to say all along.
~
Yunho's kissing him when the words finally tumble out.
I love you.
After he says them once, Changmin can't stop. It's like a dam's been opened, all the times he'd been wanting to say it but didn't having built up and now pouring out all at once, until all that's coming out of his mouth is loveyouloveyouloveyou. He clutches at Yunho's arms, trying to ground himself. I love you.
Yunho lifts Changmin up the stairs to his room, ignoring Yoochun and Junsu's harmonized catcalls and Jaejoong's knowing smile.
When they're finally alone, all Yunho does is pull Changmin into his arms and kiss him again.
I know, I love you more, he says when he finally pulls away, both of them out of breath, and proceeds to show Changmin exactly how much.
