Better Pray For Your Sins

My knitting has been a frame for most of my life lately. I knit while talking, while walking, while eating. I think about knitting as I'm lying in bed listening to Brian's snoring over the sound of the air conditioner. As of this moment I am in the middle of three different projects, my bag, a scarf for my mom and a hat for my brother Marcus (which ( Read more... )

The more excluded and ostracized a group is, the more likely it is for them to indulge in behaviour that would earn them societal scorn. So, drugs being primarily escapism, the early gay subculture had quite a lot of drugs because, I believe, they knew they weren't going to be accepted anyway.

Now it's a self-fulfilling prophecy. Young black American men, especially urban, are expected to engage in theft and violent crime. Gay men are expected to have many partners and do club drugs. White heterosexual men, meanwhile, can sleep around because boys will be boys, and a couple spliffs here and there is just natural experimentation.

Looking over this comment, I think I could have just left it at the first sentence. Ah well.

No! no! It was an interesting read and I think it makes good points. It certainly went a long way in answering questions I had about the community.

This is the best post ever. 1) I love Rufus Wainwright (um, ps...he was addicted to crystal meth in the early 2000s...it took a wake-up call from Sir Elton John to get him to go to rehab), 2) you;re becoming a nester! What with the knitting... 3) your dad...sigh...he's a man of his generation. My dad once told me "you know, most of the gay guys I've met have been pretty normal". I just think it's a good sign that he's more worried about drugs than...you know...the actual gay stuff and 4) Queer as Folk is fun, but unrealistic...it's really more like porn. No one gets laid as easily as (the ironically named) Brian does. And there is no club called Babylon in Pittsburgh. I used to live there...so I know.

Lol, Pittsburgh... "the Cultural District" not= Gay district... maybe Squill was the closest thing? or the South Side?

I heard somewhere that Pittsburgh was picked as the location because Manchester was the "Pittsburgh of England" so they just kind of splashed the name on top of Toronto streets and called it a location. There were a good number of people who were always asking about Pittsburgh from different shows, and it was almost always Toronto they had seen... go figure.

(I went to Pitt and ended up exploring most of the city in the four years I was there, even made it through the Hill one Sunday on foot... something I will never do again/)
