President Bush Can End the Genocide in Darfur
Today is a National Day of Conscience to end the genocide in Darfur. TrueMajority started the day with a live webcast with some of the refugees living in camps on the border with Chad. It was an incredible experience. We’ve archived it, and you can see it at www.truemajority.org/darfur_webcast.cfm.

Over 2,500 people, many of them TrueMajority members, are fasting today in solidarity with the people in Darfur. You can see a map showing where they are at www.darfurgenocide.org/hungerstrike.htm. Click a dot to find out who is fasting and what is motivating them.

What needs to happen now is for President Bush to lead an international “coalition of the caring” that can provide safety for the people of Darfur and the aid workers who are trying to save their lives. As one aid worker just out of Darfur wrote us, “There is a saying in Darfur: ‘The solution to the crisis requires three things-security, security, security.’” An international security force costing a tiny fraction of what we are spending in Iraq could provide this security. All we need is a president with the political will to make it happen. His current strategy of using sanctions is simply not working.

So what can you do now? Send a message to the president telling him to do as every member of Congress has requested: end the genocide. To do this he must lead an international humanitarian mission that includes a multinational security force. If you received this e-mail message from TrueMajority, you can just hit “Reply” and “Send” in your e-mail program and we’ll send the message (text below). If you’d like to edit the message, or if this e-mail was forwarded to you, just click this link:

Thank you for doing what you can,

Here is a copy of the letter we will send to the president:

Dear President Bush:

Genocide is taking place in Sudan, and we must act to stop it. Aid agencies are routinely turned away from camps by the government-backed Janjuweed militia. We must act today to do everything we can to stop the killing of the people of Darfur.

Both houses of Congress have unanimously called the atrocities taking place “genocide” and have called on you to act. Your strategy of using sanctions is not working. It is time to put together a “coalition of the caring,” a multinational force that includes both humanitarian aid and the military force to ensure the security of the aid workers and the people of Darfur.

Will you lead it?

Sincerely,
(We’ll put your name and address here.)

Dear MoveOn member,

Next week in New York, Republican politicians will try to make the case that their party represents mainstream American values. Don't be fooled.

Because at the same time that Republicans claim they represent all of America, they're fielding candidates who have some pretty outrageous and radical views. Republican congressional candidate and eugenics supporter James Hart, for example, recently explained his campaign strategy to reporters: "Every person who opens the door - as long as they're white - I'll say, 'I'm James Hart. I'm running for Congress."[1]

We can't afford to let people like James Hart run our country. So today, we're highlighting five of the candidates who are going to take it back - folks running against far-right candidates in very close races. If we support all of them, we have a great chance of winning back control of the U.S. Senate.

Contribute to their races and watch our shocking new web video featuring more radical Republican quotes at:

https://www.moveonpac.org/give/04endorsed.html

Our video is comprised of actual quotes from Republican candidates and office holders, highlighting the truly extreme, hate-filled views of many of the Republican party's top officials and current candidates for public office. It's short, and definitely worth watching. Check it out at the link above.

The right wing's strategy for tightening its control over America and the world depends on convincing us that the Republican party is fundamentally moderate. But the fact is, Republican candidates hold a lot of views that sharply differ with those of ordinary Americans. And they try to gloss over these differences through spin - remember Bush's 2000 campaign theme of "compassionate" conservatism and his promise of a "humble" foreign policy?

We can't let Republicans get away with this bait-and-switch any longer. If we want to take back our country and defend the values that make it great, defeating President Bush is not enough. Even if Kerry wins, he won't be able to turn things around if Republican extremists still control the U.S. Senate.

We've got to win back the Senate, seat by seat.

Today, we urge you to support five Senate candidates who have a great chance of winning important races and knocking out the kind of extremists highlighted in our web video. They are: Ken Salazar in Colorado, Tony Knowles in Alaska, Erskine Bowles in North Carolina, Inez Tenenbaum in South Carolina, and Brad Carson in Oklahoma.

Each of these candidates is running in a state that has increasingly come under Republican control. Yet their races are still competitive. And with your help, we have a real chance to win these crucial Senate seats and an opportunity to take back the U.S. Senate.

These five candidates will be competing against some of the most right-wing Republicans in the country, all whom will be well funded. Pete Coors, beer magnate and leading donor to the conservative Heritage Foundation, is the GOP nominee in Colorado. In Oklahoma, the Republican Senate candidate is U.S. Representative Tom Coburn, who criticized Newt Gingrich for being too moderate and also said, "I favor the death penalty for abortionists and other people who take life."

And while each of these candidates has an opponent who has proven themselves to be far to the right of the mainstream, each of these five Democratic candidates has proven their ability to win, often against great odds.

Inez Tenenbaum, currently the Commissioner of Education in South Carolina, won more votes on the 2002 ballot than any other state-wide candidate in this increasingly conservative state. Tony Knowles, the Democrat who was twice elected Governor of Alaska, remains popular in Alaska, a solid Republican state. And Erskine Bowles, former Clinton Administration Chief of Staff, continues to lead in the North Carolina polls, despite the GOP's best efforts to undermine him.

Your gift of $25, $50, or $100 to each of these candidates can and will make a huge difference, for each of these candidates and for the country as a whole.

You can give to each of them in less than five minutes at:

https://www.moveonpac.org/give/04endorsed.html

With your help, we can take back control of the U.S. Senate and stop a new generation of extremist candidates before they get to Washington.

Sincerely,

Dear VoteToImpeach / ImpeachBush.org Member,

What was Mayor Bloomberg in New York thinking? If groups of twenty or more people arrive as a group in New York City during the Republican National Convention (RNC) wearing "I Love New York" or "I Love Bush" t-shirts they will be welcomed with open arms in the Big Apple. But if a group of twenty or more people arrive wearing "Bush Lied Thousands Died: ImpeachBush.org" t-shirts they are threatened with arrest for carrying out an unlawful demonstration - unless, of course, they applied for and received a permit. But the City is refusing to grant permits to groups holding anti-Bush rallies in Central Park.

Doesn't that just make you want to round up twenty friends, put on your Impeach Bush t-shirts, and head for Central Park this weekend!

Come rain or shine, permit or no permit, New Yorkers and people from around the country are going to be waving Impeach Bush signs and banners in the streets around Madison Square Garden before and during the days of the RNC.

Outraged already by Bush's lawless conduct, the endless lies, "pre-emptive wars," and the assault on the Bill of Rights, people are sickened by Bush and Karl Rove cynically attempting to use the pain and grief experienced by New Yorkers on September 11 as nothing more than a Hollywood-set so that George W. Bush can act his part as a John Wayne tough-guy type leader.

Well, Bush is not getting away with it. Hundreds of thousands of people will be in the streets in New York during those days. The whole world will be watching New York at the end of August and thankfully they will see a massive display of Impeach Bush sentiment.

We all owe a great debt to the volunteers around the country who are making this all happen. Arranging transportation, printing and circulating leaflets, petitions, paper impeachment ballots, bumper stickers - all of these tasks are being carried out by people who believe that the impeachment of Bush is a requisite act. Otherwise criminal acts go unpunished. Criminals go free. The Constitution is sullied and its principal mechanism to insure accountability devolves into rhetoric and fantasy.

All of these efforts, as well as the newspaper ad campaign, are sustained because of the generous contributions of those who believe in the centrality of the Impeach Bush movement. This work continues because of the support it receives from those who recognize that we have come to a critical phase in the life of this country.

Please help today so that in the coming days, everywhere that the cameras turn, everywhere that Bush and his cabal look out their limousine windows, everywhere the delegates walk - they are confronted with the clear sentiment of our movement: IMPEACH BUSH!
