CHARACTER INFORMATIONSERIES: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)
NAME: Alphonse Elric
RACE: Human
AGE: Technically: 3 Mentally: 17 Physically 13 17.
Explanation: Alphonse actually has lived previously to the age of 14 before. During the Fullmetal Alchemist series (2003) Alphonse grows and spends several years(four) with his soul stuck in the body of a suit of armor. His brother Edward Elric, sacrifices his own life to bring Al back to life. However, when Alphonse was revived, he was returned as a ten year old boy with no memories of his previous years lived. He spends the better part of three years searching for his brother and a way to restore his memories. Upon passing through the gate to follow Edward back at the end of the movie Conqueror of Shamballa and being whisked away to Hogwarts, he will be restored (aged-up physically) to match his proper mental age.
CANON POINT: After stowing away in a suit of armor and passing through the gate way to the other side the gate at the end of Fullmetal Alchemist: Conqueror Of Shamballa.

GENDER: Male/Male
APPEARANCE: After being restored by his older brother Edward he was stuck in the body of a ten year old boy with no memories of his last four years. After training with Izumi and leaving to walk his own path, he takes to
wearing a similar attire and hair style to his older brother. Though one will notice that in comparison to Edward, Alphonse's hair is a few shades darker and his eyes are brown instead of gold (like his Mothers'). Once, he arrives in Hogwarts, Alphonse's body will undergo another physical transformation that ages his body up to the appropriate age of 17. At this stage of his life, he will taller than his older brother and similar in appearance to
Alfons Heiderich, but still with the same darker shade of hair and brown eyes. This
picture is probably the best I could find under the circumstances that will show Al while he is out of his Hogwarts uniform.
PERSONALITY & HOUSE REQUESTS:
Alphonse Elric is in many ways a foil to his brother Edward’s impulsive and rough personality. Where Edward is abrasive and arrogant, Alphonse is gentle and modest. Alphonse likes to think himself a gentlemen, noble, kindhearted, compassionate and patient to a fault. Alphonse is an exceptionally bright young man, he has a good memory, a quick wit, and a decisive mind that can quickly assess details and apply solutions. Where Edward goes rushing in, Alphonse takes his time and thinks through a situation. Above all else, Alphonse, is self-sacrificing. He will not think twice about putting his own life in harm’s way if it meant saving an innocent life, a friend, a loved one, and sometimes even an enemy.
Before his mother’s death, Alphonse lead a happy life. His curious nature and drive for knowledge was sparked by the discovery of his Father’s alchemy research. Alongside Edward, they taught themselves the basics of alchemy and came to understand how to make simple toy-like things at first. Trisha, their mother, was even surprised to see that the boys understood and she only helped to fuel Alphonse’s growing appetite to learn. His high level of intelligence and eye for detail becomes even more apparent as the boys age and continue to teach themselves over the years.
It is the death of Trisha that brings the boys to a crossroad. One where Edward suggests that they bring her back using what they have learned. Lost, sad, and as desperate as Ed to feel the warm touch of his mother, Alphonse agrees. The decision ultimately costs him his body. At the age of 10, Alphonse Elric’s soul becomes attached to an aged piece of armor in the workshop of their estranged father. Denied physical growth, Alphonse is left to mature mentally in practically invincible suit of armor. He admits after Edward has recovered the use of his limbs that he did have his reservations about transmuting their Mother and that he should have spoken up. This is the first time we see Alphonse acknowledge his insecurities and his nature to yield to his love ones judgment ( even if it was not for the best ). During the same conversation Alphonse vows to stay by Edward's side and become a state Alchemist as well, so that in the future he will find a way to restore what Edward lost (his arm and leg), but never does he blame or feel wronged by Edward's choice to put him in the suit of armor. In fact, Ed's constant struggle to continue moving forward no matter the cost helps to strengthen Alphonse's own resolve and solidify his promise to restore Edward's body to its original state.
The gunmetal suit of armor eventually leaves many to confuse Alphonse as the “Full Metal Alchemist”, but the suit of armor grows to become one of Alphonse’s biggest insecurities. Alphonse dislikes being reminded of his large size and often becomes upset when it brings unwanted attention to him. He often cries out that it was not his choice to become so big. He grows to crave the warmth of human touch and comes to fear that he might never know the touch of another human being again, and how he wishes he could touch Edward and feel him again.
When the Brothers make their way to investigate the 5th Laboratory, Alphonse has an encounter with a suit of armor infused with the soul of Barry the Chopper. Engaging 'Number 66' in battle, Barry begins to toy with Al's mind, through out the fight. He inevitably implants the idea that his entire personality and back story could be an implanted by the one responsible for creating him (Edward). Refusing to believe it at first, Alphonse's insecurities grow as he fails to remember a friend from his home town that he went to school with and used to play with, and Edward's strange behavior after a near death experience with Scar ultimately drives him to assume that he is not real and he runs away. Without a doubt the many sleepless nights prior only made him worry more.
Eventually, Edward manages to reveal to Alphonse that his strange behavior centered around the fear that Alphonse blamed him for condemning him to live part of his life in the suit, without being able to touch or feel. With the misunderstanding put behind them, Alphonse realizes how badly he was over reacting and recommits to finding a way to restore both of their bodies.
Some claim that Alphonse displays the psychological mindset of a child, due to being trapped in a suit of armor at the age of 10. It is certainly true that Alphonse enjoys being treated like a child, it happens so rarely that he cannot help but become enamored by the idea of being treated like the child he really is. Though one could argue that this is just another piece of proof that Alphonse Elric has the ability to be extremely selfish. He ignores the right thing to do over the course of the anime series, in lieu of what he wants to do - so that he might accomplish his own goals. For instance, after being turned into the philosopher's stone he goes and visits Shou Tucker to learn how to use the stone so that he can use it to restore Edward's body back. He also fights with Al over the homunculus Sloth and whether or not During the movie, Conqueror of Shamballa, Alphonse also uses alchemy to open the gate and connect our world with Amestris. Which ends up costing hundreds of innocent people their lives when Dietlinde Eckhart invades Amestris. Both events are done without any regard for the consequences, Alphonse's goal was always in some way centered about Edward (restoring his body or finding him).
The law of Equivalent Exchange, which serves as the foundation for Alphonse’s system of beliefs is at the root of this. Following the basic rules, one cannot gain anything without giving up something in return. The journey and life lessons that Alphonse has learned, has helped to make him a much stronger person and the man he will ultimately become in the future. However, Alphonse is granted a chance that not many people get, to start anew and fresh (thanks to Edward's sacrifice). The fact that Alphonse goes on to study alchemy again under Izumi and takes to wearing clothes and his hair in a similar style to Edward that shows even without his memories intact he still has an intense bond with his older brother. This shows, like so many other times throughout the series how important Edward is to Alphonse. The entire series is nothing but a testament to the Brother’s close emotional and physical bond.
Alphonse is forever touched by his brother’s sacrifice, awestruck by his inability to give up, and ultimately grateful for not dying and keeping his promise. They have been to hell and back, and without Edward, Alphonse would fall apart. When the two boys are often in danger, and Alphonse takes it on himself to try to save Edward, they often are left arguing in the end over protecting each other. It’s during these moments that those watching get to see another side of Alphonse. The one that can explode at a drop of a dime with emotions such as anger, rage, and fear. His selflessness kicks into high gear and his desire to keep Edward safe above all else clouds his judgment. It makes an idiot out of both of them:
Al: [punches Edward, leaving him shocked] Why didn't you run away when I told you to !!? What kind of idiot are you?!?
Ed: No way!! I'm not just gonna run away and leave you behind!
Al: WHICH IS EXACTLY WHY YOU'RE A IDIOT! [punches Edward again as their quarrel catches attention from a spectating military]
Ed: What do you keep punching me like that for? If I'd run away you could have been killed, you know that?!
Al: And maybe I wouldn't have been! Making the decision to die is something only an idiot does!
Ed: Hey, easy on the "idiot" stuff. I'm still your older brother, got it?!
Al: [grabs him by the collar] I'll say it all I want to!! Survival is the only way, Ed... Live on, learn more about alchemy... You can find a way to get our bodies back and help people like Nina... You can't do that by dying! I won't allow you to abandon the possibility of hope, and choose a meaningless death. [his arm falls off] Oh, great! AND NOW MY ARM'S COME OFF BECAUSE MY BROTHER IS A BIG, FAT IDIOT!!!
Ed: Hmm... We're really falling apart, aren't we, Brother? We look like we belong in a junkyard.
Al: But we're still alive.
Ed: We are.
Alphonse's protective nature can be seen over multiple times during the course of the series. He often takes the time to pick up stray cats for brief periods of time, hiding them in his empty chest cavity and keeping them dry while it rains. The biggest of which usually involves Edward. Shortly after their first real encounter with Scar, Edward and Al are sitting beside each other ( both badly injured ). In the end, and even after all his mistakes, he still makes the decision to follow Edward through the gate and into an unknown world, all for the sake of moving forward with the person most important to him.
With all this kept in mind, I would like to request that Alphonse be placed in Gryffindor upon his arrival, with his secondary house being Ravenclaw. Ultimately, I believe Gryffindor would be best because of his courage and bravery in the face of adversity. He is also willing to put his life on the line to protect and defend those he cares for, not to mention if it means sacrificing or taking the questionable road to protect those he loves, he would do so without a second thought. Alphonse also would find a proper home in Ravenclaw due to his obvious intelligence and quick wit. Sadly, I even have to admit that Hufflepuff would also be a logical choice, and I imagine the sorting hat would have quite the time attempting to sort Alphonse based off his many amazing personality quirks.
COMMUTER DETAILS: Untapped. Al's not exactly the type to align himself with evil, he's very much for the good of the world.
POSITION: Student, 3rd year.
ORIENTATION: Alphonse is primarily heterosexual at least from what is shown through out the course of the series. Though on a whole Fullmetal Alchemist opts to keep relationships among characters a side thought. In episode ten (The Phantom Thief), Al grows enamored with an older woman named Clara, he clearly states though that she reminds him of his Mom, so romantic feelings are left open to interruption - though Ed does seem to grow very envious over the way Al acts. As a young child he used to fight with Edward over whom would get to marry Winry and as he grows older even the Author jokes during an omake that Alphonse has a primary goal of finding a girl friend. However, Alphonse has absolutely no experience when it comes to dating or sex, but he likes to think himself a gentleman at least (he probably has a better sense of how to court another person than Edward). Alphonse’s caring and understanding nature would never leave him to judge or look down on another person for loving someone of the same sex. This can be seen in the way he openly tells Ed that he wants to be able to touch him again. Asking furthermore, if that is weird, can easily be taken to mean that Alphonse sees nothing wrong with being physical close with a person of the same sex.
ABILITIES & POWERS: Alphonse Elric is capable of performing
alchemy. His ability to pay close attention to detail ensures that any of his alchemical transmutations are completed quickly and efficiently. He does not go out of his way to create elaborate or gaudy things (that’s Edward’s job), but he has known to be creative from time to time if the situation calls for it. During the period of time Alphonse spends with his soul trapped in a suit of armor we see he is capable of performing transmutations without being in direct contact of his transmutation arrays (he is often seen standing directly over the array beneath him with his hands crossed in the air over them). This could possibly be attributed to having passed through the gate, much like Edward is capable of performing alchemy without an array after seeing 'The Truth'.
However, even without alchemy, Alphonse is an extremely intelligent young man and possesses a great wealth of knowledge in the fields of biology and chemistry. Upon taking the written portion of the Military State Alchemist exchange, Alphonse was able to complete the entire certification exam, something most candidates (including Edward) were unable to do. Alphonse would have went on to become a state alchemist if it had not been for the inclusion of a physical exam, wishing to keep his physical condition a secret he was forced to drop out.
Alphonse was also trained by Izumi Curtis in both alchemy and in hand to hand combat. “To train the spirit(mind), first train the body." Izumi’s starting lesson and the ones that followed help condition him to survive in the wilderness. Edward even remarks that Alphonse is an even more skilled combatant than himself and notes that he has never beaten him in a fight, this applies to even before Izumi's training. Alphonse was capable of appearing graceful as a giant suit of armor for years, keeping up in hand to hand combatants with vicious opponents like the homunculus and Scar.
Alphonse also had the 'privilege' of being made into a living philosopher's stone. This provides a boon to his alchemical abilities and transmutations, but also comes to eat away at his armor the more power is used in turn. It also grants him the ability to transmute without the use of arrays, but Alphonse sacrifices his life and the stone to restore Edward back to life.
Three years after his resurrection at the hands of Edward Elric, he loses all of his previous memories and experiences (including the ability to transmute without an array). Returning to study under Izumi, now on his own Alphonse excels even further beyond his previous years. Transmuting water out of sand, despite lacking obvious materials to transmute from (something Edward failed to do when they first crossed the desert into Liore). He also takes to wearing white gloves with a pair of transmutation arrays drawn on the palms, to allow him to mimic Edward's transmutation style. Also, as a result of the multiple changes his body and soul went through over four years, Alphonse also has the ability to transfer portions of his soul into inanimate objects and cause them to come under his control (ie: Golems). While in this state, he is able to see from the perspective of and communicate through his various avatars - though he does this mostly while sleeping as he has greater control. However, after a few hours his soul does detach and return to his body.
While in Hogwarts, his knowledge in alchemy will provide him a strong foundation and the ability to excel in transfiguration. In the future and under the correct tutelage, Alphonse may also come to find that altering his form comes naturally and more easily than other witches or wizards. So he may focus his time in becoming an animagus if given proper permission. Like his brother Edward, Alphonse will also notability receive outstanding marks in such classes like potions and alchemy.
Obviously, magic and the studies included in his curriculum at Hogwarts will be new and require some time to master. I would like to request that he is placed at a 3rd year level, based on his age and skill, but he still will not manage to be more powerful than any teacher present (he's still got a lot to learn about magic after all).
WAND:
11 inches, Cedar with a unicorn hair core, slightly yielding. Cedar is known for choosing an owner who are both extremely perceptive and loyal. It is also said that cedar carries the potential to be a frightening adversary, which often comes as a shock to those who have thoughtlessly challenged them, especially when it comes to using magic for those whom the owner cares for deeply. As for it's core, it should be obvious that unicorn's are the purest of creatures and Alphonse like his wand core is every faithful and not likely to ever be turned to the dark side.
MISC.: As stated in the powers section, in the future I would like to explore the possibility of Alphonse taking to studying to become a Animagus. I believe given his history of changing from one form to another would prove to make this type of transfiguration magic to come quite easy to him. Obvious animal form would be a
cat. Also, much like Edward's prospective player, I wish to request that Alphonse be allowed to study Alchemy within Hogwarts as well. However, I will understand if such a class remains restricted from his curriculum for now.
WRITING SAMPLESFIRST PERSON:
[Alphonse is seated in the center of his four post bed when the video feed begins to record, for once his long hair is left to hang over his shoulders. The dark dirty blond strands given a thoughtful tug as he looks towards the screen and smiles.]
It's been three years since I cut my hair. I think I never bothered because in a way it was like a promise... something I'd do after I found my Brother.
[His smile begins to spread slowly as he talks, and if that isn't a big enough clue, then the triumph in his eyes speaks the truth for him. He found Edward all right, not only that, but they were together again.]
I was thinking that it's time I cut it! This length has never really been my style...
[He laughs softly as he gives his head a toss, sending his long hair every which way.]
Someone wouldn't happen to know of a spell that cuts hair would they? If not I'd settle for a pair of scissors. I used to cut Ed's hair all the time, I guess it wouldn't be so hard to do to myself.
[He pauses thoughtfully, thinking about how he might go about trimming down his own hair to the way it used to be when he was younger. The more he thinks about it though, the more he questions his ability to cut his own hair. ]
On second thought.... maybe someone wouldn't mind helping? Someone who's not, Edward?<
[The faltering smile on his face shows he means no offense of course, Ed (you never were any good at taking care of yourself).]
THIRD PERSON:
Alphonse is not usually one to be out after lights, but with a transfiguration exam looming and a Brother hell bent on getting the top score here he was sneaking through the dark halls away from the Gryffindor common room and towards the library. It was easy enough to avoid the routes of the Perfect's used to patrol, but the Ghosts and Argus Filch always proved more difficult. Especially, when one ghost seemed to have a personal vendetta for Alphonse's older brother.
Alphonse had already argued staying behind in the common room to study, after all, all the material they were going to be tested on had already been provided to them earlier in the week by Professor McGonagall. Inevitably, he gave in to Edward's idea and crazy plan of sneaking out, if only to ensure that Edward did not make any more trouble that would cost Gryffindor more points than it had to if they were caught. Of course, he would be saving the I told you so's, for later when they both had detention together.
After narrowly avoiding an encounter with Peeves and a small side argument, in which he suggested they return to the common room, Alphonse noticed they had just another hallway to go before they would have found themselves standing before the large wooden doors of the library. Taking a moment to glance back at Edward, he smiles, relieved that they managed to make it without getting caught. He steps into place behind Edward as his brother takes the lead, but his body collides with Edward's after only a few steps.
"Ah-!" Alphonse released a surprised sound as he grasps hold of Edward's shoulder to maintain his balance. After a moment of glancing around the hall in confusion, Alphonse manages to spot two bulging yellow, lamp-like eyes staring at them from the end of the hall.
"It's just Mrs. Norris, Brother," Alphonse explained as he gave Edward a good hard shove forward. Alphonse had dealt with Mrs. Norris many times since his arrival and the scrawny dust-colored furred cat was like any other. Despite her reputation and her loyalty to Mr. Filch, she was a cat, Alphonse imagined not many people gave her the sort of attention she so well deserved. Of course, Alphonse knew that with Mrs. Norris around that Mr. Filch would not be too far behind, so he quickly retrieves a small folded handkerchief from his robes and the sweet glazed ham he saved from dinner within.
"I suppose you're expecting something?" Alphonse whispered to the cat as he holds the meat within mouth's reach and when the piece of meat has been devoured he adds, "Equivalent exchange now, but I promise I'll have another treat for you the next time we meet."
Mrs. Norris apparently satisfied by the given terms, gives Alphose's hand a nuzzle before making her way down the hall and past the older Elric Brother. Now holding the library door open, Alphonse waves at Edward to join him, "Come on, Brother. We haven't got all night."
