This is such a great post. I can't tell you how good it feels to be off of FB right now, for so many reasons.

Addendum: one of the thing that scares me most about FB is how it's all mixed together. Friends and acquaintances, practical strangers. Births, deaths, jokes, all instantaneously delivered in a way that makes the significant seem fleeting and vice versa. I've been meaning to reexamine my own use of it, and now is the perfect time.

I understand. I love my FB breaks. And I hate them. I love clearing away that connection with all of its disconnects, but I hate missing out. And I miss the validation it brings. (How awful and shallow and human.)

You should watch the most recent Frontline called the "Like Generation" or something like that, basically about how social media is to kids these days. It's interesting how the propose that it's a sort of freedom for them, the ability to do/see/be in ways they couldn't normally, especially for teenagers always struggling to be treated as adults.

I often think about how the world is different because we can pretty much connect with anyone, anywhere at any time. In the past, your "social network" was just those near you.

I was just told about that in my Advanced Policy class! I need to watch it. On that nite I've temporarily (maybe) deactivated my Facebook. It's become unhealthy.
