Chapter 11

Stepping through the doorway of the visiting room, Frank curled his fingers into the hem at the back of Gerard’s jacket, keeping the older man close as if there were a possibility he would vanish. The atmosphere inside felt nothing like he could have imagined. Every movie, every television show he had watched formed no connection to the prisons’ interior. There were no glass screens or dead-end phones on the walls. Inmates were not restricted in cuffs nor clad in orange overalls, and there were no more than three guards in the room, all lined up against the walls, their faces blank and bodies stiff, making it hard to tell if they were actually doing their job or simply fed up. Energy saver lights flickered to dully lighten the room and cheap steel fans spun helplessly from the ceiling, the tables appeared battered, dented and scratched with god knows what objects and the dirty plastic chairs were no better off as they seemed to have holes melted into them in random places.

Not having realized his grip on Gerard was somehow lost, whilst glancing furthermore around the room in search of a prisoner who somewhat resembled his counselor, Frank noticed the older man was already past the first row of tables and that he was still stood dumbly in the doorway. Rather hurriedly, he stalked across the room, subtly flinching when he caught sight of random inmates eyeing him strangely and re-took a hold of his counselor once reaching him again.

“Everyone in here is weird.” He mumbled into Gerard’s sleeve before noticing another man standing right in front of them, whom he instantly assumed was Mikey and slightly lowered his head, hoping he hadn’t heard him.

Gerard smiled down at Frank. He wouldn’t say it aloud, but right then he couldn’t help but find the boy oddly adorable, so instead he draped an arm over his shoulders and pulled him a little closer to calm his nerves.

“Is he your latest boyfriend?” Mikey asked, smirking whilst nodding towards Frank. Apparently giving a simple ‘Hello’ wasn’t Mikey’s style of greeting.

Gerard smiled back at his brother, and began softly stroking Frank’s hair. “No. I adopted him.” He stated, as if it were completely obvious.

Frank looked up at Gerard, eyebrows stitched together and nose scrunched unsure if whether or not he was about to laugh or was actually a little disturbed by what his counselor had just said.

“Does he molest you, Frank?” Mikey asked softly, placing a hand on his shoulder and looking rather concerned. “Because it wouldn’t shock me at all if you were to say yes.”

Frank simply twitched.

“Shut up, Mikey, you’ll get me arrested before I even have a chance to.” Gerard spat, and Frank’s twitching only became more noticeable.

“You sicken me.” Mikey scowled.

The three of them were silent for a moment, during which Frank noticed both Gerard and his little brother were staring at him, seemingly studying him.

“Does he talk?” Mikey soon asked, dipping his head down to meet Frank’s own.

If Frank wasn’t so busy trying to figure out what was going on he would have said something to prove that yes, he does talk, but all he could manage to do was watch Mikey intently to see if he emitted any signs of a crazy person.

“Of course he talks!” Gerard scoffed. “Frank, say something.” He nudged the boy.

Frank took a second, still gawking at Mikey before saying, “Gee, I don’t think this person is your brother.”

Gerard looked confused while Mikey instantly laughed. “You’re right, he is cute.” He nodded to his older brother before turning back to Frank and asking, “What’s your name again?”

“It’s Frank. You said it like a second ago.”

“So I did.” Mikey mused, tapping his fingers on his chin.

Frank still thought Mikey was crazy.

“I’m sitting down now.” Gerard announced, already taking a seat and pulling the chair next to him out for Frank.

Frank sat and Mikey quickly joined them, smiling warmly, though Frank thought he just looked creepy and again, another cloud of silence fell upon them. Even though he didn’t really have any expectations, Mikey really wasn’t the sort of person Frank had imagined him to be. He really wasn’t all that freaked out by the younger Way, if anything he was glad that he already seemed to be much like his older brother, sarcastic and quite random, nevertheless, he couldn’t be quite sure so keeping his mouth shut for the time being seemed like the best idea.

“So Mikes,” Gerard shuffled in his seat, “how you been doing?”

“Oh y’know, working on the side of the road, sleeping in a barred room, taking cold showers. Yeah, not too bad.”

“That’s good then.”

Mikey shrugged. “You spoken to mom? She said she might come see me tomorrow.”

“Shit, yeah, I spoke to her this morning at breakfast. She can’t make it; something’s happened to her car, it’s fucked-”

“-We’ll just have to get her a new one then. Or, Frank can, can’t you Frank?” Mikey looked expectantly at the teen.

Frank let out a soft scoff, realizing that his counselor has spoken to Mikey about him a lot more than he had first thought. “Ah, I don’t think Gerard would approve of that.”

“Sure he would!” Mikey belled, passing a sly smirk to his older brother. “That’s why he brought you here; to learn from the greatest.” He waved his arms at his chest in awe of himself.

Frank was quiet as he re-registered what he thought Mikey was trying to say. He turned to Gerard who looked liked he just wanted to stay out of it before asking Mikey to clarify. “Wait. What?”

“I’m the best,” Mikey said plainly before the blank look on Frank’s face made him realize that the kid and no clue what he was talking about, and looked to his brother a little puzzled. “What? You haven’t told him Gerard?”

Gerard shook his head, as did Mikey whilst letting out a sigh. “You’re an idiot. I thought you brought him here for a lesson, not a fucking field trip.”

“I thought you could tell him.” Gerard defended.

“Yeah, Gerard, don’t give him a heads up or anything. I thought you were his counselor. Aren’t you supposed to talk about this kinda shit?”

After simply listening as his counselor and Mikey ‘discussed’ their little secret, Frank had quickly become even more confused and rather irritated with Gerard for not having told him whatever it was Mikey assumed he already had. Today had already played out nothing like he had expected and he could tell that soon he was going to be even more surprised.

“I couldn’t.” Gerard mumbled as his bit his bottom lip. “You know why I-”

“-Do one of you mind telling me what the hell is going on?” Frank interjected. “Because I’m still sitting here and clearly this has got something to do with me,” He paused to face his counselor, “or do you just like keeping shit from me?”

Mikey and Gerard were silent, the older man’s eyes widening at the teen’s mild outburst.

“Yeah he does actually, Frank.” Mikey answered for his brother coldly.

Gerard glared back; he didn’t need him to start talking about personal shit now. “What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”

“You and Bert maybe.”

Gerard scoffed, “Oh, come on. Yes Mikey, please bring that up as much as possible because it’s totally relevant.”

“IT IS! I go get donuts, get back and you were fucking him in the back of my car.”

Frank cringed at Gerard. “Eww, the one we drove here in?”

Mikey sighed. “Oh god, did you fuck him in my car?”

“NO!” Frank exclaimed.

“Well, not yet anyway.” Gerard added.

“Shut up, Gerard, you’re not fucking me in that car! You creep.”

The two continued bickering as Mikey’s face went from amused to disgusted a few times over as he watched them.

“Well I didn’t give myself a hand job in the drivers’ seat, did I?” He said crossing his arms to emphasize his point.

“Oh god, that’s disgusting.” Mikey cut in.

“Did you have sex with any other males in that car?” Frank asked, hurt.

Gerard sighed. “No Frank.”

“What about girls?”

Gerard stayed quiet. Frank let out a deep breath and shook his head, disappointed that his counselor was turning out to be quite a slut.

“Ah, don’t worry Frankie,” Gerard sighed, “I haven’t slept with anyone since I met you.”

Just as Mikey was letting out a coo of ‘Aww’s’ a modest smile spread across Frank’s face. “Really?” He squeaked.

“Really.” Gerard confirmed.

“Can we get back on topic?” Mikey asked.

“What is the topic anyway? I’m having trouble understanding what the topic is.” Frank looked between the other two.

Gerard sat back in his chair and sighed. “Mikey’s a criminal, I’m a criminal, you’re a juvenile criminal, and we all seem to be in prison at the moment.”

Frank rolled his eyes. “Well I could have told anyone that, idiot.”

“Well you couldn’t have told anyone that I was a criminal. Did you miss that part?” Gerard asked.

“Yeah I could have. The car today? That’s actually illegal, I am a minor you know?”

“Yeah, I was aware of that, Frank. That’s not what I meant.”

Frank looked sideways at his counselor. “What did you mean?”

Mikey pulled back slightly away from the table and assumed Gerard wouldn’t want to talk about it so he filled the teen in on his older brother’s behalf. “I helped him steal cars.”

Frank’s ears pricked. “Wait, you helped Gerard steal cars?”

“Yeah, Gerard and Bert stole cars together, I hacked into the systems for them.”

Frank almost smiled. “Whoa. Um, wasn’t excepting that.” He looked to Gerard who was simply nodding with his head down. “So why aren’t you in prison too?”

Gerard looked up at Mikey, then to Frank. “Because Mikey doesn’t blab like Bert does.”

Mikey moved closer into the table, his arms rested on its surface as he leaned across to Frank. “That’s why he feels bad.” He whispered.

Frank shook his head and lifted his hands signalling for Mikey to just stop for a moment. “Okay, let me just work this out.” He paused, “You and Bert, were you’se ‘together’?” He asked Gerard.

“Yes.” Mikey answered.

“Shut up Mikey, I can answer.” Gerard scowled.

“Dick.”

“Shut up! Yeah we were Frank, but Mikey didn’t know at the time.”

Frank nodded, still trying to piece it all together.

“Until I found them in the car.”

“Yeah I got that bit.” Frank smirked. “So, like, how…I mean, what, what happened exactly? How did you get caught,” He looked to Mikey, “but you didn’t?” He then looked to Gerard.

Gerard sat back in his chair and waved a hand at Mikey, signally that he didn’t want to explain anymore and that his little brother could.

“How ‘bout I just tell you straight,” Mikey suggested. “Gerard asked me to help him and Bert out with this job they wanted to do ‘cause Ray, our other friend who was the guy who normally did all the hacking shit told him he wasn’t up for it and I was the only other person Gerard knew who could.

Anyway, I agreed, clearly. We had two cars, Gerard and I in one Bert in the other. Bert got caught, he spilled his guts about me only, ‘cause like you already know he ‘loved’ Gerard at the time. Two days later cops show up at my house, Gerard wasn’t home so I kept my mouth shut about him. Bert only got six months, heard he got out about two weeks ago actually.”

“Bert’s out?” Gerard questioned.

“Yeah. I can’t believe you ever liked him.”

“I didn’t know, Mikey. How the hell could I have known he’d do that?”

Mikey looked blankly at his brother. “’Cause he’s always been an asshole.
Anyway, doesn’t matter, so yeah Frank, that’s what happened.”

“Hmm,” Frank raised his eyebrows, “so, what does this have to do with me again?”

“Are you kidding? You committed the same crime.” Gerard turned to face him.

“Yeah, but it was my dad’s business, it wasn’t as risky. And besides, you did it too.” Frank defended himself.

Mikey and Gerard stared at each other briefly before the older man turned back to Frank. “I think you’re missing the point.”

Frank shook his head and let out a short cough. “No Gerard, I get what you’re trying to say or do or whatever, but it still seems a little hypocritical you sitting there preaching to me about something you also did.”

“Okay, well I still don’t want you to go to prison Frank how about that? I brought you here because I visit Mikey most weekends anyway, and I thought it’d be good to both get you out of Juvy for a while and show you that doing this kind of shit isn’t all fun and games; that there is places worse than where you are right now. I know I fucked up, I’m not going to lie about that, I just wanted you to see first-hand the kind of life you and your buddy Jeph could have if you both go back to doing the same thing when your time is up.”

Frank lowered his head and nodded. For the first time he actually felt like Gerard was being his counselor more than he ever had been before. He had been right when he said the best results came from not talking about it until the person in trouble brought it up themselves. Gerard never talked about what he and Jeph had done, there really wasn’t any need to because Frank knew it was stupid all along. And now, sitting in a prison with someone who Gerard loves knowing that that person had put themselves on the line for him, only proved to Frank that his counselor had good intentions all along, he just had a funny way of showing it.

“I’m not mad at you, Frank,” Gerard started again as he placed his hand on the boys leg under the table. “I never have been. It’s just, when I read your file it was too close to home for me to ignore.” He paused, a sly smirk playing on his lips. “Plus when I walked in on you already in my office that morning I wanted to walk back out because I already liked you too much.”

“God, we’re not back to that again are we?” Mikey whined.

Frank laughed gently. “I just can’t really believe it. How much longer do you have Mikey?”

“Ah, another eight months I think. I only got a year and a bit, but it’s not the point, Bert is a piece of shit and…actually, no I think that’s it, Bert’s just an asshole.”

They were all quite for a moment, during which Frank couldn’t help but keep smiling as he felt his counselor’s hand float higher up his leg; he had already dodged being in prison for theft, he’d soon he’d have to dodge charges for statutory rape.

“Just before you two go…” Mikey sighed, “…I know stuff, like I mean…I know, okay…” He motioned to both his brother and Frank. “…just be careful.”

“What do you mean?” Frank asked.

“I know Gerard’s hand is on your leg.”

“No it’s not!” Gerard belled.

“Yes, it is. You’re hand wouldn’t be under the table if it wasn’t.”

“Whatever, Mikey. We’re not stupid okay?”

Mikey rolled his eyes at them. “Look, Gee, you know I don’t care what you do. I just don’t want you to end up in here.”

Gerard and Frank looked solemnly at each other. “We’ll be okay, Mikes.” The older man assured, earning a gentle smile from his little brother.

“So are you staying at my place then?” Mikey asked as he stood from the table.

“Yeah, just for tonight.” Gerard told him as both he and Frank stood from the table also.

Frank jutted his chin forward at Mikey. “You have a place in New York?”

“Yeah, but it doesn’t have beds. Sorry Frankie.”

The teen looked to Gerard disappointed. “His place doesn’t have a bed?”

“It does, don’t worry.” He muttered.

Mikey held his arms out childishly, motioning for both Gerard and Frank to hug him their goodbye’s and as they did he mumbled into Frank’s ear, “He’s gonna try to fuck you and I don’t blame him.”

Frank pulled away quickly and smiled. “Damn, I wish you weren’t in prison.” He said with a wink.

“What the hell was that? Stop that.” Gerard demanded, catching onto Frank flirting with his brother.

“Ooh, someone’s the jealous boyfriend.” Mikey teased.

“Shut up Mikey, he’s not my boyfriend.”

Frank raised his eyebrows and folded his arms. “Well maybe I’ll just stay here with Mikey then.”

Mikey laughed and Gerard simply grabbed Frank’s hand and said, “Fine then, you’re my boyfriend.” Before turning to make his way back out of the room.

Frank half turned as his counselor dragged him away and gave Mikey a little wave. Mikey smiled and waved back calling out just as they reached the door, “Safe sex is good sex. Don’t get the boy pregnant.”
