I have a question: the lawn is presently mown grass; what would the original lawn have been? When did mowed grass come into vogue? Anybody? :)

Lawns really came into vogue I think with the Victorians in the late 19th cent when lawnmowers were invented. Before that it would have been hordes of gardeners with scythes and shears, and sheep. I doubt there would have been much grass inside the castle before then. There would have been too many animals about and outhouses for stables, storage etc.

Thanks kizzicat. That's sort of what I guessed. I read some of its history, very interesting. The original site is much older than this castle. And in the mid-1800s one of the Lords Percy had the Gothic ornamentation REMOVED =:-O
