I need help putting together a runic charm. I want it to serve two purposes - to protect the new puppy we've brought into our family after having unexpectedly lost Sabaka, our companion of 11 years, and to help me stop worrying irrationally that something is going to happen to him. Losing Sabaka was quite a shock. He had looked and acted ( Read more... )

Well, thorswitch, I understand your fears. I had to put to sleep our own dog of 16 years which was perhaps the hardest decision I’ve ever had to make. An ordeal I would not want to experience ever again hence I have not taken another furry companion. I fear if I did have another one I would get all worked up as much as you are currently. Sigh.

Anyways may I suggest Wulþor (Ullr) the Huntsman. I hear he has his own hunting canines so I would fathom he would look kindly upon your needs. And you need not look further than Woden and who faithfully trots beside him. :)

I'm sorry to hear of the loss of your fur baby. I know howclose to these wonderful babies we can get. I got small Thor's hammers and put tbem on the dogs' collars, just 'cause. Can't think of a ritual right off hand for protection or a bindrune, but it surely wouldn't hurt to ask the big guy to keep an eye out for your little one. I don't think the fear is irrational, well, maybe a bit, but understandable considering what happened to the last one. Just love him and enjoy the gift of life.

It has been my own impression that Máni very much looks out for children and has an especially soft spot for dogs, and/or those that can't look out for themselves in dangerous situations.

For myself, I am more likely to ask my patron to look out for my fur-children, as I have the closest relationship with him and believe he has the most reason to grant this request.

Also, for anything having to do with the home and protection of the home and those in it, it may be beneficial to turn to your Dísir.

{totally off the record} We at Troth-Contact have been trying to figureo ut how to answer the query you posted. See we officially are only supposed to answer general information on Troth stuff. WE occasionally get posts like yours, but really taking it to the Member's list or to a known runester is better.

The problem is that more people are going to express sympathy than give you the advice you want much like the folk above have done.

I'm not a great runester, remember I'm a Spaemadhr, but a referral to the Member's list worded more directly towards getting a runic assistance might help.

ACK!!! Oh no! I am SO sorry! I meant that to go to the Members list, not the contact one.

Your suggestion for trying to find a runster is a good one, and something I should have thought of (I've been having a few more "doh" moments than usual lately) and I'll check into that.

Again, I am VERY sorry for any inconvenience from my sending that to the wrong list :(

Oh no! I am SO sorry!

Not a problem! You also apologized to the Contact list so we understand.

I am VERY sorry for any inconvenience

No inconvenience, we get all sorts of stuff on Troth contact all the time. I spent *six weeks* talking to a guy that wanted to treat us like the bleeding Catholic Church and wanted me/the Troth to decide whether he should be in Heathenry or Druidism.

Sorry to hear about the lost of your friend... it must be devastating... :(

I think heethen_crone's answer is good... after all Thor is the God who Protects us, so his hammer on a pendant or medallion would be good...

Also wyrtward's suggestion of my patron, Ullr/Wulðor is good. Prayers to Him and Skaði/Scæðu would be looked on kindly as they have their hunting wolves... and taught mankind to hunt with dogs... :)

Unless you are certain of what the bind rune implies, I'd be wary of using one. If you must use a rune, then a single Algiz/Elhaz would be suitable, in my opinion.

May Wulðor and Scæðu ease your anxiety and give you confidence that this new friend will be with you for many years.
